CHAPTER 17 DIGESTIVE SYSTEM OVERVIEW This chapter is about the digestive system, which processes food so that nutrients can be absorbed and utilized by the cells. This chapter begins with a description of the general functions of the digestive system and names the major organs of the digestive system (Learning Outcomes 1,2). The structures and functions of the alimentary canal beginning with the mouth and teeth are addressed (Learning Outcomes 3-6). The chapter continues with an examination of the secretions of the digestive system and the mechanisms that regulate those secretions (Leaming Outcornes 7 9).
