Pukekohe High School YEAR 12 NCEA Physics 2017 Course Composition This course is made up of 4 Physics Achievement Standards at level 2. Number Title Credits Assessment AS91170 Subject Reference Physics 2.3 Demonstrate an understanding of waves. 4 External AS91171 Physics 2.4 6 External AS91172 Physics 2.5 3 Internal AS91173 Physics 2.6 Demonstrate an understanding of mechanics. Demonstrate an understanding of atoms and nuclear physics. Demonstrate an understanding of electricity and electromagnetism. 6 External Total possible credits = 19 (An extra internal is possible for students wishing to work towards excellence) See the Pukekohe High School Assessment / Aro atawai Student Information in the Student Planner to familiarise yourself with your rights and responsibilities as well as information about: Authenticity Appeals Lateness Reassessments Verification Derived Grade Procedure Retention of Student Work Strategies for success: Have a set time for home learning (usually 20 to 25 min each day) Complete home learning and hand in assignments on time Put time into studying for assessments Catch up work missed through absence Monitor own achievement Positive attitude Externally Assessed Topics: Achievement standards 2.3, 2.4 and 2.6 are assessed through written exam at the end of the year Internally Assessed Topics: Achievement standard 2.5 is internally assessed, with the optional 2.2 also being an internal. Inter-class comparability / moderation will be achieved in the following ways: - a rigid marking schedule will be formulated - check marking between classes will be carried out to ensure and even standard of marking. Other Assessment Students will be expected to carry out on-going study throughout the year, learning for topic assessments which relate to the units. Each major topic will be assessed with a knowledge test using the NCEA system of Achieve, Merit and Excellence. The school exam late in term three will give students practice in exam techniques as well as an opportunity to understand the amount of effort required to achieve to the best of their ability. Note: The results of all assessments will be significant if a derived grade (due to sickness, family bereavement during exams) is sought. Reassessment There may be no reassessment opportunity for Internally Assessed Standards, depending on the particular Standards requirements. It is therefore important that all students complete formative opportunities to the best of their ability to get useful feedback prior to the summative assessments. Records Students will be supplied with a table giving assessment dates with space to keep an on going record of results. Entering NCEA Students will be expected to complete all work for this course. The number of Achievement Standards entered will depend on the ability of the student. This decision will need to be made later in the year, in consultation with care-givers and the classroom teacher. Stationery Students will be expected to purchase (at school) the Physics Workbook for NCEA Level 2 (Nelson) at a cost of approximately $30.00. This contains the years notes and practice questions. A 1J8 exercise book is also of use. Subject Progression: Leads to the senior subject of level 3 Physics Future Pathways: Engineering, medicine, electrical, architecture and many more. Most of these pathways have multiple career opportunities. IMPORTANT – Year 13 Entry Requirement: Passes in all of the external level 2 standards or with FL or HOD approval. Parent Signature____________________________ Student Signature__________________________ ACHIEVEMENT STANDARD OUTLINES Physics 2.2 – AS 91169 - Credits 3 (Optional- for excellence endorsement) Demonstrate understanding of physics relevant to a selected context This achievement standard involves the understanding of physics relevant to a selected context. Achievement Criteria Achievement Achievement with Merit Achievement with Excellence Demonstrate understanding of physics relevant to a selected context. Demonstrate in-depth understanding of physics relevant to a selected context. Demonstrate comprehensive understanding of physics relevant to a selected context. 1 Demonstrate understanding involves providing characteristics of, or an account of the physics related to the selected context. Demonstrate in-depth understanding involves providing reasons as to how or why the physics applies to the selected context. Demonstrate comprehensive understanding involves linking ideas to integrate physics relevant to the selected context, and involves elaborating, justifying, relating, evaluating, comparing and contrasting, or analysing the physics underpinning the context. 2 The selected context must involve physics principles that are at curriculum Level 7. It may be technological or biological. Physics 2.3 – AS 91170 - Credits 4 Demonstrate understanding of waves. This achievement standard involves demonstrating understanding of waves. Achievement Criteria Achievement Achievement with Merit Achievement with Excellence Demonstrate understanding of waves. Demonstrate in-depth understanding of waves. Demonstrate comprehensive understanding of waves. Assessment is limited to a selection from the following: Light: reflection in curved mirrors refraction through lenses refraction total internal reflection critical angle at a plane boundary. Waves: reflection and refraction at a plane boundary including phase and wave parameter changes if applicable superposition of pulses diffraction through a slit 2-point source interference (qualitative).
