Caboto Club Italian Culture Lecture Series presents
The Rise & Fall of the Roman Empire:
Is America headed for the same end?
In Partnership with Canterbury Elder College (U of W) – 7 PM
Mon 26 Sept - The Republic Era 509 - 27 BCE
These pillars of the Roman Republic brought law, order and
prosperity to lawless lands, and led to a 1000-year empire:
Rule of written laws voted by the citizenry, citizens’ rights,
democracy, regular elections, blind justice (everyone treated
equally before the courts). The republic finally fell prey to
infighting & civil wars among the elites & rule by emperors.

Mon 3 Oct - The Imperial Era 27 BCE - 476 CE
The Roman Empire began with noble intentions and structures
and under the rule of Caesar Augustus enjoyed many years of
peace. There are many different theories about the fall of the
empire and perhaps an equal number of lessons to be
learned. We will explore the tumultuous and sometimes
barbaric events of those centuries, along with some
comparisons with current political events of today.
Mon 17 Oct- The Fall of Rome & the U.S. today:
Part 1: The Roman Empire saw a staggering increase in
the cost of elections, including dubious campaign funding
sources, continuous and expensive wars distracting
attention from domestic challenges, foreign powers
lavishing money and attention on the republic's leaders, and
the collapse of the middle class.

Mon 24 Oct – The Fall of Rome & the U.S. today:
Part 2: Politics as the road to personal wealth. Profits
made overseas shape internal policies, gerrymandering –
absurd electoral boundaries, the loss of the spirit of
compromise, ordinary citizens had less & less choices,
deficits passed on to next generations. Roman Aristocrats
were the only choice they had. This parallels today’s
scenarios where Wall Street leaders are too big to fail or jail.
