Welcome to the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine. It is our mission to bring to the bedside the best in
clinical care, research and education. We are committed to be the best in the Intermountain West and
top 10 in the nation with respect to the study, teaching, and delivery of cardiovascular care. Our
talented faculty participate in research and clinical work to build an integrated multidisciplinary
cardiovascular center. With our team of more than 75 faculty, 25 fellows, and 100 support and clinician
staff, we work to drive the mission of the University of Utah Health Sciences, to advance health.
Within our clinic space, our providers deliver excellent patient care at 20 outpatient clinics across five
western states (Utah, Idaho, Nevada, Wyoming, and Montana). Along with providing expert care in
general cardiovascular medicine, our clinicians also specialize in the following conditions:

Our division enjoys a rich history of nationally recognized research and discovery. In 1982, the University
of Utah made history when we implanted the first artificial heart in a human. Other notable advances
include beta-blocker therapy for heart failure, treatment of myocarditis, as well as the genetic basis of
long QT syndrome, William’s syndrome, and Hereditary Hemorrhagic Telangiectasia. Our division
currently leads the world in the use of cardiac magnetic resonance imaging to plan the management of
atrial fibrillation and the use of left ventricular assist devices to recover the failing heart.
In addition to the above efforts, the division also collaborates with the Comprehensive Arrhythmia
Research & Management Center (CARMA) and the Nora Eccles Harrison Cardiovascular Research and
Training Institute to further discovery in cardiovascular disease.
As part of the School of Medicine, we have an important social mission to educate and train the next
generation of cardiovascular physicians and providers. Our cardiovascular fellowship programs provide
the skills to become exemplary clinicians, scientists, teachers, and leaders in cardiovascular disease
while also embracing the empathy to care for patients with heart and blood vessel disease. We offer
highly competitive ACGME-accredited fellowships in Interventional Cardiology, Electrophysiology, and
Advanced Heart Failure and Transplant Cardiology as well as training programs in Advanced
Cardiovascular Imaging and Adult Congenital Heart Disease.
In 2013, I decided to come to the University of Utah to be part of this great legacy. As I lead this division,
we will continue to build on the strong history of cardiovascular medicine at this great institution. I
