YOUTH MINISTRY DEPARTMENT For complete information, visit www.eastern.edu/youth_ministry BA Youth Ministry DEPARTMENT DISTINCTIVES • Recognized in Youth Ministry circles as one of the strongest in the U.S. • Practical ministry to adolescents integrated with Bible, theology, human development, ministry leadership and organization, and a variety of societal issues teenagers face in today’s culture • Field placement requirements allow students to work in a wide variety of settings: churches, Young Life, global mission agencies, urban after school programs, and pregnancy counseling centers. • Diverse course offerings in ministry skill development, biblical foundations, analysis of cultural challenges to teens, and practical experience in the field • Faculty reflect decades of ministry experiences on several continents, in adolescent psychology, pastoral ministry, urban ministry, hip hop culture, anthropology, para-church ministries, camp ministry and curriculum development. • Faculty are all involved in current youth ministry work and are available for advising and engaging in discussion about ministry with students. CAREER TRACKS Graduates enter careers focused on ministry in churches, para-church organizations, urban settings, camp ministry and management and international missions. CAREER TRACKS Communication Studies graduates have pursued careers in public relations, community relations for nonprofit organizations, advertising, journalism, human resources, radio, television, marketing and event planning. ENGLISH DEPARTMENT For complete information, visit www.eastern.edu/english BA English: Concentration in Literature BA English: Concentration in Writing BA English: Concentration in Journalism DEPARTMENT DISTINCTIVES • Transformation of Yourself and Society - The English department believes that reading and writing produce both individual and cultural transformation. Students develop leadership skills and gain real-life experiences through internships, teaching assistantships, and service learning projects. They can write and design the school newspaper, publish in the campus literary journal and practice screenwriting for a semester in Los Angeles. • Intellectual Rigor and Religious Maturity - Students critically analyze literature and write creatively in intimate seminars and workshops. Closely guided by Christian professors, seniors produce a final project: in the writing concentration, students develop a 45-page manuscript in the genre of their choice, and in the journalism concentration, students research the ethical choices in a digital information age. • Cultural Diversity and Creativity - The English department offers specialized courses in Scottish Literature, Shakespeare in Popular Culture, World Fiction, Postcolonial Women's Novels, and more. Because innovative teaching is valued, students have visited Philadelphia's quirky Magic Gardens for writing exercises or the Rosenbach Museum to view original manuscripts. • Wonder, Study and Travel - There are opportunities to attend Oxford University in England, St. Andrews University in Scotland, the Oregon Extension or The Washington Journal Seminar that includes an internship. In addition, a unique 3-week, faith-based, gender studies seminar in literature and writing on the coastal region of Maine is offered. CAREER TRACKS Preparation for graduate or law school, community relations, advertising, human resources, sales and marketing, editing, and writing. Graduates may pursue occupations in the fields of law, publishing, advertising, education, business, social work, activism, and public relations. LANGUAGES & CULTURAL STUDIES DEPARTMENT For complete information, visit www.eastern.edu/languages BA Spanish BA International Area Studies and Business DEPARTMENT DISTINCTIVES • Distinguished Faculty Representing several continents, faculty hold degrees from top universities in the U.S., Argentina and China. Their teaching style and Christian worldview engage students in the classroom, encouraging them to embrace and serve people from other cultures. The Department celebrates Dr. Francois’ Fulbright Award to Burkina Faso, Africa where she taught American literature to African students in the 20092010 academic year. • Connect The identity of a people is inherently linked to their language. The Language Department’s emphasis on cross-cultural communication challenges students to not only learn the language, but to develop an appreciation of the culture of those who speak the language. Students interact with the Hispanic community in the Philadelphia area by attending church, teaching ESL, tutoring at Esperanza College of Eastern University and by participating in mission trips to French and Spanish-speaking countries where they experience both spiritual and intellectual growth. • Grow All language majors study abroad for one or two semesters as part of the program requirement. Students return with bilingual skills prepared to enter diverse careers. There are several opportunities to double-major in Spanish and a second area of interest.
