LITERATURE CIRCLES: FINAL PROJECT
BOOK COMMERCIAL
Assignment
In your group, using Windows Movie Maker, Photo Story, or MS PowerPoint create a convincing book
commercial for your classmates advertising the book you read for literature circles.
Basic Steps
1. Chose a propaganda technique* and follow the steps below.
2. Write out a draft or script to use as the narration of your book commercial. Include the following in your
book commercial:
a.
Title, author, and genre of book.
b.
Summary of plot, characters, and theme.
c.
Opinion and/or recommendations for book.
d.
Persuade your audience to read the book.
3. When using Windows Movie Maker Create a folder on your ‘my documents’ or your Student drive called
Book Commercial Project. Save all of your work in that folder. Always, save a ‘save project as’. When you
finish the commercial you will save as a movie (.wmv file). You will not be able to make changes once you have
saved as a movie.
Pictures
4. Select pictures that you feel help portray the story’s elements and characters. Find usable (royalty free)
pictures on the internet.
Creative Commons has Flickr (http://www.flickr.com/creativecommons/), a free resource of non-copyrighted
images that can be used. You can also search for your own images online using a variety of multimedia search
engines, like Google (http://images.google.com/ ).

Once you find your pictures you will need to save them to your ‘my documents’ in your Book Commercial
Folder. This will give you a location in which to save the pictures and the project as you are working on it. Give
credit for all pictures in credits page.
Music
5. Add music and narration to the book commercial. Put all music and narration in your book commercial file.

SAVE!
6. Save your project in your Student Drive by creating a new folder called bookcommercial.
Ready for Movie Maker or Photo Story!
7. Now you are ready to import all of the information you saved into movie maker. Have fun!
Requirements:
1. The book commercial should be 1 -1 ½ minutes long, contain pictures, a title page, credits page,
music (copyright free music or royalty free music), and narration.
2. The narration should be a brief summary of the book with a review by you the reader on what you
found interesting about the book. Finish the review with your group’s recommendations and a convincing
reason to read the book. All material is to be appropriate.
Be creative! These commercials will be used to encourage my other students to read these books. Spoiler
Alert! Be sure not to give away the ending! The goal of this commercial is to get other classmates to read the
book, not to watch your commercial instead.
*Some Propaganda Technique ExamplesBandwagon: Propagandists use this technique to persuade the audience to follow the crowd.
Testimonial: Propagandists use this technique to associate a respected person or someone with experience
to endorse a product or cause by giving it their stamp of approval hoping that the intended audience will
follow their example.
Plain Folks: Propagandists use this approach to convince the audience that the spokesperson is from humble
origins, someone they can trust and who has their interests at heart.
Assertion: An assertion is an enthusiastic or energetic statement presented as a fact, although it is not
necessarily true. They often imply that the statement requires no explanation or back up, but that it should
merely be accepted without question.
Some more suggestions…
There are three parts to a good book commercial: the hook, the content and the cliffhanger.



The Hook – Something that will grab the listener’s attention. Get them excited and interested.
o
A quote that you liked from the book
o
Read a scary/funny/exciting part of the book
o
Link the book to a movie (For example: If you liked The Hunger Game movie, you might like…)
o
Ask a question the listeners can relate to (Example: Have you ever felt like the world was against
you?)
The Content - Tell about the characters and/or the plot
o Give the title of the book and author's name toward the beginning
o
Give a brief summary of the plot.
o
Mention any interesting characters.
The Cliffhanger: Leave the listener’s with wanting more so they will want to read the book to find out what
happens.
o End the commercial unresolved with something up in the air.
o
Could be a question like “If you want to know what happens next, read the book”
