The Circulatory System By: Daniela Lopez, Ivan Llamas, and Beatriz Marmol Video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DAXa4eR1s0M It’s Function The circulatory system functions in the delivery of oxygen, nutrient molecules, and hormones and the removal of carbon dioxide, ammonia and other metabolic wastes The circulatory system works thanks to constant pressure from the heart and valves throughout the body The circulatory system is composed of the heart and blood vessels, including arteries, veins, and capillaries The Heart The heart is a muscle located a little bit to the left of your chest The heart's main function is to pump blood throughout the body The blood provides the body with oxygen and nutrients that it needs and carries The right side of your heart receives blood from the away waste body and pumps it to your lungs while the left side of your heart receives blood from the lungs and pumps it out of the body The Arteries Each artery is a muscular tube lined by smooth tissue and has three layers: the intima, the media, and the adventitia Arteries carry blood from the your heart to the rest of body It is conveyed from the heart to all parts of the body Veins Veins carry blood back to the heart They have the same three layers as arteries but are thinner and less flexible The two main veins are the superior and inferior vein which are located above and below the heart Veins contain valves which prevent blood from flowing backwards Capillaries Capillaries connect the arteries and veins They are very important because cells get their nutrients and oxygen from them They also remove waste products and carbon dioxide How This Organ System Works With Other Organs It supplies oxygen and nutrients by working with the respiratory system The digestive system works very closely with the circulatory system to get the absorbed nutrients distributed through your body The circulatory system also carries chemical signals from your endocrine system that control the speed of digestion Which Diseases Affect Your Organ System One of the most common diseases of the system is arteriosclerosis, which results from the growth of fatty deposits in the arteries Another disease, hypertension, commonly called high blood pressure, is often associated with arteriosclerosis A substance called plaque can build up in the arteries, restricting blood flow and ultimately stopping or blocking it altogether. This plaque can cause serious cardiovascular disease that leads to heart attack, stroke, peripheral artery disease or renal artery disease Question #1 It supplies and .
