Our dynamic city deserves local access to world class

I
t’s hard to believe the Rose is heading into its sixth season.
Each year brings a new challenge to present the right variety of programming
to suit our diverse audiences.
As I began programming, I looked at your feedback, your requests and at box
office returns. I asked myself, how can I make the Rose more accessible to a
broader portion of this community, maintain our mandate to present culturallydiverse work and challenge our patrons to take artistic risks? The answer is, with
an eclectic blend of commercial and well-known acts sprinkled
with lesser known, yet dynamic, performances and a lot
more family-friendly shows, guaranteeing a broad range of
choice for everyone.
I hope to introduce to you shows you might not have
thought to attend, but whose international reputation
makes them worthy of being presented on our stages.
This year it’s “surprise and be surprised”, with some
performers returning, others gracing our stage for the
first time, some big names, and others, the bright
stars of tomorrow ready to be discovered by you.
My credo continues to be to dare to challenge our
audiences, not compromise on creativity and quality
and, just maybe, to not always fit the mold.
Welcome back to our theatre!

“A gift for taking an
arrangement far and
wide, from blistering
pace to slow and sweet.”
– Vancouver Sun
For the first time in popular music, the greatest albums from the 60s,
70s and 80s are recreated live on stage, note for note – cut for cut.
When Ashley MacIsaac burst on the worldwide scene with 1995’s
Hi, How are you Today?, he scored the kind of coup instrumental
artists often dream of. Going triple platinum in Canada and
breaking down radio barriers with the Gaelic single “Sleepy
Maggie”, Ashley became an immediate pop icon – rebellious and
exuberant, resplendent in kilts, army boots and combat pants.
Since its release in 1980, this album has become a record-shattering
rock ‘n’ roll landmark, passed along from generation to generation and
guaranteed a spot on the shelves of every music enthusiast not living
under a rock (and some that are). The first album with new front man
Brian Johnson, Back In Black turned out to be the best selling hard rock
album of all time with an estimate 49 million plus albums sold worldwide.
These days, his playing stronger than ever, Ashley delves back to
his Cape Breton roots, bringing to the stage an impressive array of
traditional East Coast fiddle tunes, performed with a virtuosity not
seen or heard from any other artist.

Perhaps best known for his
collaboration with “soul mate”
Eric Clapton, the early days of
Bluesbreakers garnered John
Mayall world-wide legendary

popular acclaim which illustrate
his ongoing mastery of the blues

Based on the Charles Dickens classic story.
Complete with falling snow, exuberant dances, flying ghosts and
the streets of Dickensian London, A Christmas Carol is brimming
with emotional power and pure joy. A marvelously-told story set
with beautiful melodies and touching lyrics, this spectacular musical
ran for ten years at Madison Square Garden and the show’s original
song “A Place Called Home” has become a holiday standard.
This Charles Dickens classic has the full Broadway treatment by the
team of Alan Menken (Beauty and the Beast, Little Mermaid), Lynn
Ahrens (Ragtime, Seussical) and Mike Okrent (Crazy For You, Me and
My Girl.).

Masterful vocalist, songwriter
and pianist, Mark Masri returns
to the Rose Theatre with an
inspired Holiday performance. As we discovered last season,
Mark has the talent and passion
to affect people; his music
transcends generations with
lush vocals, elegant delivery
and timeless appeal. Embrace
the spirit of the season with
Masri’s expressive versions
of Christmas favourites such
as “Ave Maria”, “What Child
is This” and “O Holy Night”.
With the voice of an angel and
the soul of an artist, Masri is
Canada’s next vocal sensation!
For the first time in popular music, the greatest albums from the 60s, 70s
and 80s are recreated live on stage, note for note, cut for cut.
In Through The Out Door is the last proper Led Zeppelin album and the
band sounds so assured that it’s hard to believe the end was just around
the corner. With a few interesting stylistic detours--the almost salsa-like
piano that drives “Fool in the Rain,” the country-flavoured hoedown of
“Hot Dog”—this is for the most part 1970s rock in the grandest style.

From the veteran clowns of Cirque du Soleil’s Allegria and O, comes a
unique theatrical event for the entire family. Rooted in a unique style of
clowning that combines the unbridled silliness of slapstick and humour of
physical comedy with theatrical expressionism, poetry and the European
avant-garde, Aga-Boom cuts through the barriers of language and culture.
Wild chases and a frenzy of
scenes lead to a chaotic and
unforgettable finale that
will leave you breathless!
No matter your age,
uncontrollable fun awaits
as the Aga-Boom clowns
spin circus wizardry that
will bring you back to
the excitement, the pure
delighted amazement and
wonder of childhood.

One of Canada’s most prominent
virtuoso violinists, Angèle Dubeau
has performed on the world’s
greatest stages in a spectacular
career that has spanned over
30 years. In 1997, she founded
La Pietà, an all-female string

has been unanimous: their dazzling
virtuosity, impeccable precision,
energy, and style are equated only
by the obvious pleasure they take
and communicate when playing.
In A Time For Us you will hear special moments of music
from great composers like George Gershwin, John Williams,

With the release of their fourth studio album Believe, Emerson Drive
secures its place as the premiere band in contemporary Country music.
The album showcases all of the attributes that have fueled the group’s
long, steady rise through the country ranks: passionately expressive
vocals, extraordinary musicianship and the quintet’s ability to choose
first-rate songs.
The band exudes a raw energy that has made them one of modern
music’s must-see live acts. Their last album, Countrified, gave them
their first #1 single (“Moments”) and earned them nominations for a
dozen major awards, including a Grammy.
In a brand new live production, Koba Entertainment brings you the
theatrical debut of a longstanding classic. For the first time ever, Richard
Scarry’s Busytown will take the stage and become larger than life!
Busytown Busy captures the incredible world of Richard Scarry, and
follows the adventures of his six unforgettable friends Huckle Cat, Lowly
Worm, Sally Cat, Hilda Hippo plus Pig Will and Pig Won’t. Together the
friends look for the answer to three unique bamboozling mysteries and
discover some fascinating surprises along the way.

sheena easton
The final Doors album to feature vocalist Jim Morrison reaffirmed
the quartet’s grasp of blues-rock. The overall sound of the record
is relatively stripped down but the musicianship is uniformly
excellent. Jim Morrison’s voice, somewhat ragged and weatherworn, adds its fiercely unmistakable resonance. The now classic
“L.A. Woman” was a fitting swan song for one of the most unique
and important bands of the 60s.
With a career that has spanned 30 years, Sheena Easton remains a
consummate performer and audience pleaser. She has earned two
Grammys, Gold and Platinum albums in the USA, Europe and Asia
and was the first artist to have a Top 5 hit on Billboard’s five key
charts. A major attraction in Las Vegas over the last decade, Sheena
was recently inducted into the Las Vegas Hall of Fame.

This is the formula for Canada’s celebrated vocal band, Cadence.
Combining the lyricism of Stan Getz, the sophisticated harmonies of
the Count Basie Big Band and the devil-may-care attitude of Louis
Prima, this fabulous foursome has been entertaining audiences

- The Chicago Tribune
This extraordinary one-woman show maps the raw, but beautiful interior life of a
misfit adolescent. Claudia, age twelve-and-three-quarters, finds herself suffering
from the triple afflictions of puberty, unpopularity, and her parents’ divorce.
Using four astonishingly expressive masks the performer evokes the anguished
Claudia, her grandfather, her dad’s new girlfriend, and the school janitor. Both
heartbreakingly sad and wrenchingly funny, I, Claudia casts a spell of rare power
in the theatre.
One of Canada’s most celebrated plays running for nine consecutive years and
winning two Dora Awards, two Canadian Comedy Awards, a Sterling Award, an
ACTRA award, and a Gemini.

In this hilarious interactive performance, the ISC creates a fully improvised play
in Elizabethan style to bring you an evening of off-the-cuff comedy using the
language and themes of William Shakespeare. Any hour could be filled with
power struggles, star-crossed lovers, sprites, kings, queens, princesses, swordplay, rhyming couplets, asides, insults, persons in disguise and all that we’ve come
to expect from the pen of the Great Bard. Nothing is planned-out, rehearsed, or
written. Each play is completely improvised, so each play is entirely new!
Featured at the prestigious Just For Laughs festival
in Montreal, ISC was recently honored by the Chicago
Improv Foundation as its “Ensemble of the Year”.
