World War II Essay Questions
1. It can be argued that the outbreak of WWII could have been avoided by the European
leaders. It was their decisions and actions that helped plunge Europe into another World
War. Explain the actions taken or not taken by the leadership of Europe and the U.S.
that helped to catapult the world into war. Consider the objectives, fears, and goals of the
various leaders and countries around the world as you explain the reasons for WWII.
2. The Summer of 1940 was such a crucial time in the beginning of World War II. Explain
the events that occurred during this time. How did German victories in the west affect at
least two of the following powers and their actions: France, Great Britain, the Soviet
Union, and the United States?
3. Based on your knowledge of the events surrounding Pearl Harbor do you see any way
that the United States could have avoided or blunted the Japanese attack? What were the
major mistakes made by both the US and the Japanese before during and after this attack?
Speculate on the outcome if some of the mistakes had not occurred. Consider the goals
and objectives of the countries involved and how they impacted their actions.
4. From the readings and classroom discussions of the battles of WWII there were
numerous turning points in WWII. What were some of Hitler’s mistakes that impacted
some of these turning points of WWI? Which turning points seem to have made the most
impact in the direction that WWII was taking and explain how the events changed the
war for both sides.
