Material to be covered
Review the vocabulary terms covered on Friday with Mrs. Abel—Chapter 5, Section 1,
China’s First Civilizations, pages 276-283—Locating Places (Huang He, Chang Jiang,
Anyang), Meeting People (Wu Wang), Content Vocabulary (dynasty, aristocrat,
pictograph, ideograph, bureaucracy, mandate, Dao), and Academic Vocabulary
(recover, interpret, link, item).
Go over the standards that will be covered in Chapter 5, Section 1.
Read and take Cornell Notes on “China’s Geography,” pages 277-278.
Begin reading “The Shang Dynasty,” pages 278-281, and take Cornell Notes.
Homework: Finish anything not completed in class.
Finish taking Cornell Notes on “The Shang Dynasty.”
Read and discuss “The Zhou Dynasty,” pages 281-283, and take Cornell Notes.
Homework: Finish anything not completed in class.
Do the Guided Reading Activity for Chapter 5, Section 1 and correct it in class.
Homework: Study for tomorrow’s quiz.
Open-Book Quiz on Chapter 5, Section 1, China’s First Civilizations, pages 276-283.
Begin vocabulary terms for Chapter 5, Section 2, if time permits.

Christmas break begins
This is a tentative schedule. The week before Christmas break can get a bit hectic, and we always
have some changes and interruptions to our planned activities. Please try to be prepared each day
and have the necessary books and materials with you.
Social Studies Standards
Standard 6.6 – Students analyze the geographic, political, economic, religious, and social structures of the early civilizations
of China.
Standard 6.6.1 – Locate and describe the origins of Chinese civilization in the Huang He Valley during the Shang Dynasty.
Standard 6.6.2 – Explain the geographic features of China that made governance and the spread of ideas and goods
difficult and served to isolate the country from the rest of the world.
