INTRODUCTIONTOTHESEMINAR
CentralAmericacountrieshaveafascinatingrelationshipwithpeacemakingandclimateconcerns.
Fromhighlyconflictedcommunitiestohistoricallypeacefulplaces,fromenvironmentallydegraded
areastoonesofgreatecologicbeauty,peopleoffaithin
GuatemalaandCostaRicahavebeenrespondingtoissuesof
peaceandenvironmentaljusticeissuesforgenerations.
OurTimeinGuatemala
Inthefirstportionoftheseminar,participantswillvisit
Guatemalatounderstandcurrentpoliticaldevelopments,
conflict,andmigrationrelatedtoenvironmentalandclimate
changeconcerns.Wewillstudyresourceextractionandits
social,economicandenvironmentalimplicationsforthecountry,aswellaschurchactivisminresponse
toit.Aswecoverthesecomplexissues,wewillalsolookatthecriminalizationofenvironmental
activists,indigenouscommunitiesandlandrights,andclimatechange’simpactonagriculture.Wewill
takeasitevisitwithCEDEPCAtoseecommunityeffortsandenvironmentalsites.
OurTimeinCostaRica
AftersharingworshipinGuatemala,theseminarwill
traveltoCostaRicaforthefinalfourprogramdays.In
CostaRica,participantswillexplorecurrentindigenous
communities’strugglesinCostaRicasuchaslandrights
andrenewableenergyproductionaswellasexamine
thecountry’svocationforpeace.Inadditionwewill
hearfromvariousperspectivesaboutclimatechange,
ecotourism,sustainableagriculture,andrainforestecology.Aspecialconnectioninthisportionofthe
tripwillbetheologicalandbiblicalreflectionwithUBLfaculty.
ACCOMMODATIONS
This12-daytripincludestwotraveldays,6nightsin
Guatemalaand5nightsinCostaRica.Participantswillbe
awayforoneSundayunlesstheychoosetoextendtheir
stayontheirown.Accommodationsaredouble-occupancy
andmodest.
COST
Theseminarcostiscurrentlyestimatedtobe$1,995(perperson,doubleoccupancy).Thisincludesall
seminarexpenses(includingallmeals,accommodations,programs,tips,tours,in-country
transportationandairlineticketbetweenGuatemalaandCostaRica).Internationaltravelfromand
returningtotheU.S.isnotincluded.
INTERNATIONALTRAVEL
Theseminarcostincludesaflightduringthe
seminarfromGuatemalatoCostaRica.
Participantsareresponsibletobooktheirown
flightsfromandreturningtotheUnitedStates.
ArrivalsonJanuary9mustbetoGuatemalaCity
AuroraAirport(GUA)anddepartureson
January20mustbefromSanJoséAirport,
CostaRica(SJO)Participantsmaybookthese
ticketsonlyaftertheyhavereceived
acknowledgementoftheiradmissioninthe
seminarandtheiritinerarieshavebeen
reviewedbyseminarleadership.
