CEIP Ginés Morata Almería 3rd GRADE MINIMUM CONTENTS UNIT 13: PLANTS ► PLANTS ARE LIVING THINGS a Plants are living things. They carry out three life processes: interaction, or at nutrition and reproduction. Plants cannot move from place to place, but they adapt to their environment. Some plants grow very quickly, like geraniums. Some, like oak trees, grow slowly. Plants grow everywhere: on mountain tops, in fields, in gardens, in water and even in deserts. Plants make their own food. They use the end of their lives plants die. ► TREE, BUSHES AND GRASSES Trees M sunlight, water, air and minerals from the soil. Plants reproduce from seeds. At és Trees are the tallest type of plant. They have a thick, woody stem called a trunk. Branches grow from the trunk. Many animals make their homes in in tree trunks and branches. Trees can be deciduous or evergreen. Deciduous trees lose their leaves in G autumn and grow new one in spring. Evergreen trees don´t lose their leaves and are green all year around. IP Bushes Bushes have short, woody stems. Their branches CE grow out of the stem close to the ground. Grasses Grasses are small plants. They have soft, flexible stems. They are usually green. Stem can be woody and soft. Leaves grow from the stems and branches of the or at plant. Leaves use sunlight, air, water and minerals a plant. Stems transport water and minerals from the roots to the flowers to make food for the plant. Different types of plants have different types of leaves.. Most leaves are flat to absorb as much sunlight as possible. Roots are the part of the plant that is under the M ground. They absorb water and minerals from the ► FLOWERING PLANTS és soil, and they hold the plant in the ground. Some plants have flowers. Flowers contain the reproductive organs of the plant. in The stamens are the male reproductive organs and the carpel is the female reproductive organ. They are in the centre in the flower. They are protected by the petals. G Insects such as bees are attracted to the colourful petals and nectar inside flower. While the bees are collecting nectar, pollen sticks to the tiny hairs on their backs. The bees carry the pollen to other plants when they visit other IP flowers. Bees make honey with the nectar. They use the honey for food in CE winter. ► FRUITS AND SEEDS Fruits Different types of plants produce different types of fruit. We can classify fruit into two groups: Fleshy fruits are juicy because they contain a lot of water. Melons and peaches are fleshy fruits. Equipo de bilingüismo Ana AV CEIP Ginés Morata Almería Dry fruits, such as nuts, don´t contain a lot of water. Acorns and peanuts or at a are dry fruits too. A peach is a fleshy fruit A nut is a dry fruit Seeds Plant seeds are inside the fruit. Some fruits, for example, peaches and mangoes, only have one seed, called a stone. Other fruits, for example, melons and kiwis, M have lots of seeds. The seeds can be hard, like lemons seeds, or soft, like tomato seeds. és A mango has a stone A kiwi has soft seeds in ► PLANTS ARE BORN AND GROW Plants need water, sunlight, air and minerals from the soil to grow. Some plants G live longer than others. Some complete their life cycle in one year, for example, grasses. Other plants live for many years, for example, trees. CE IP Plants die, but new plants grow from their seeds. Equipo de bilingüismo Ana AV CEIP Ginés Morata Almería UNIT 13: PLANTS ACTIVITIES a 1.- Read and complete the sentences. 1.
