Thenstudentswillanalyzethespectralanalysisofamotionlessobjectandcomparethistothe
followingspectrums.TheywillapplyHubble’sLawtodetermineiftheobjectismovingcloseror
fartheraway.
Thenthestudentwillanalyzethespeedtheobjectistravelingandrankthemfromslowestto
fastestbasedontheinformationinthespectrum.

Youknowthatelectromagneticradiationisenergyintheformofwaves.Planets,stars,andgalaxiesemit
electromagneticradiation.Asoneoftheseobjectsmovesthroughspacetowardanobserver,thewavesof
electromagneticradiationbetweentheobjectandtheobservermoveclosertogether.Thatis,thedistancebetweenthe
crestsofthewavesdecreases,causingthewavelengthtoshorten.Ifthatsameobjectmovedawayfromanobserver,
thewavesbetweentheobjectandtheobserverwouldmovefartherapartfromeachother.Thedistancebetweenthe
crestsofthewaveswouldincrease,andthewavelengthwouldlengthen.WhenastarismovingtowardEarthveryfast,
thewavelengthofitslightshortens,causingittoappearslightlymorebluethanusual.Ifastarismovingawayfrom
Earthveryfast,thewavelengthofitslightlengthens,causingittoappearslightlymorered.Bymeasuringthisblueshift
orredshiftoflight,astronomerscandeterminewhetherthestarismovingtowardorawayfromEarth,andhowfast.To
dothis,astronomersusetheshiftofspectrallinesproducedbychemicalsinthestar’satmosphere.Astronomerscan
alsousethespectrumofagalaxytotellhowfastthegalaxyismovingtowardorawayfromEarth.Usingtheprincipleof
redshift,EdwinHubblestudiedtherelationshipbetweenagalaxy’sdistanceandthespeedatwhichitmovesawayfrom
Earth.Hefoundthatthefartherawayagalaxyis,thefasteritmovesawayfromEarth.Thisrelationshipiscalled
Hubble’sLaw.Basedonthespectrumsinthefigure,rankthefourgalaxiesinorderofthespeedwithwhichtheyare
movingawayfromEarth,fromslowest(1)tofastest(4).
