A typical galaxy will contain around 100 billion stars.
We estimate that there are around 100 billion galaxies in the Universe
Light travels at 300,000km/s…….
Light travels from the Moon to
the
Earthfrom
in just
a second
……so
theover
Moon
to the
Earth in just over a second
From the Sun light takes around
8 minutes to reach Earth
and around 4 hours to reach Neptune
Light travels from the Moon to
Light takes just over 4 years to
the Earth in just over a second
reach us from the next star
Most of the stars we see at night
are 10-1000 light years distant
Light takes 2.2 million years to reach
us from the Andromeda Galaxy
Astronomers can now detect galaxies over 12.8 billion light years away.
The light left these galaxies not long after the Big Bang formation of the
Universe around 13.6 billion years ago.
So we can almost see back to the beginning of time itself.
