Students at The John Lyon School currently start Classics for the first time in Year 8, when
each student spends at least one full year enjoying a rigorous introduction to Latin language
and Roman civilisation, completing Book I of the well-known Cambridge Latin Course.
Are there any special requirements? None
What will I be studying? Year 8 students spend two lessons each week in the study of Latin.
CLC Book I, Stages 1-5: simple Latin sentences and verbal structure; subjectobject (nominative and accusative case); simple adjectives and adverbs;
noun declensions and endings; simple questions; personal pronouns; verb
endings; singular and plural;
Roman families and daily life, houses in Pompeii; food and eating, the town
of Pompeii, the forum, the theatre.

Year 8 Autumn Term:
CLC Book I, Stages 6-10: simple past tenses (imperfect, perfect); strong
perfect verbs; plural noun endings; superlative adjectives; the dative case;
full verbal conjugation in singular and plural present tense; comparative
adjectives;
Slaves and freedmen, Roman beliefs about life after death, gladiators and
the amphitheatre, the baths, schools and education.
Summer
Year 8: Summer Term
CLC Book II, Stages 11-12: extended dative case and verbs taking dative;
questions and interrogatives; full verbal conjugation in singular and plural
perfect tense;
Local government and elections; the destruction and excavation of Pompeii.
Revision and consolidation of CLC Book I. Examination.
What could I do with this subject?
Latin forms a foundation to the modern English language, providing valuable linguistic
insights to students as a result. Moreover, both French and Spanish (the modern languages
currently offered at JLS) are both directly descended from Latin. Western civilisation, of

course, was shaped predominately by the Greeks and the Romans – our study of Ancient
Rome in Year 8 aids students’ appreciation of this vital part of our European heritage.

Latin is an elective in Year 9 at The John Lyon School; students opting to continue with the
subject build upon the firm foundation established in Year 8 to develop a more detailed and
sophisticated understanding of Latin language and Roman period civilisation.

CLC Book II, Stages 13-16: the infinitive (-re) and modal verbs volo, nolo,
possum; -que conjunction; adjectives and agreement; relative pronouns and
clauses; pluperfect tense;
Britannia – Roman Britain: farming and mining, Celtic tribes and lifestyles,
The Roman Conquest 43 CE, Romanisation, trade, the Revolt of Boudica,
client kingdoms and ongoing warfare, Fishbourne Palace.

Year 9 Autumn Term:
CLC Book II, Stages 17-20: genitive case; gender and agreement;
demonstrative pronouns hic, ille; the imperative mood and commands;
vocative case; present participles; personal pronouns;
Roman period Egypt: the Nile Valley; Alexandria, glassmaking and crafts;
Egyptian religion, Isis worship, Greek medicine and science.
Year 9: Summer Term
Summer
Completion and consolidation of CLC Book II from previous terms.
Extension work and research of Classical topics, with particular reference to
GCSE-Level areas of study.
Reading and Translation Practice. Examination.
What could I do with this subject?
Year 9 Latin allows students to complete Book II of the Cambridge Latin Course with rigour
and extended learning, facilitating invaluable preparation towards GCSE Level studies in the
subject. The study of Roman Britain allows students unique insights into the ancient heritage
of Britain, while our examination of Roman period Egypt provides more diverse
opportunities and enhanced variety of content.

Latin represents a high-value subject at Key Stage 4 (GCSE), with students at The John Lyon
School studying through the prestigious, traditional OCR examination syllabus. In the first
year of GCSE studies, students will focus primarily on extending their intermediate linguistic
skills and knowledge, utilising Books III and IV of the Cambridge Latin Course, as well as John
Taylor’s Essential GCSE Grammar.
Are there any special requirements? Completion of Book II in the Cambridge Latin Course
What will I be studying? Students spend three lessons each week studying Latin at KS4.
CLC Book III, Stages 21-24: Perfect passive participles; perfect active
participles; additional genitive case usage; participles overview; neuter
plurals; cum + subjunctive mood; imperfect and pluperfect subjunctive
Roman Britain: Aquae Sulis and its baths, magic and curses, Roman religion,
travel and communication.
Spring
Year 10 Spring Term:
CLC Book III, Stages 25-28: Indirect questions; purpose clauses; gerundives;
indirect commands; result clauses; ablative case; expressions of time;
prepositions with accusative and ablative;
Roman Britain: The legionary soldier, army officers, the legionary fortress,
interpreting literary and archaeological evidence

The second year of GCSE studies emphasise preparation for examination in authentic set
texts, both Historical and Mythological. Students will continue to expand their knowledge of
Latin grammar to an Advanced / Higher level, using relevant sections of the Cambridge Latin
Course and John Taylor’s Essential GCSE Grammar, as well as a variety of other resources
and past papers.

present passive infinitive; future passive tense;
Rome: Roman society and classes; astrology, philosophy and other beliefs;

The first year of A-Level Latin …. Teaching is divided between Unit 1 Latin Language and Unit
2 Latin Literature (prose and verse) – two members of departmental staff will be largely
responsible for the delivery of one unit each.
Autumn
With regard to Language, students will spend much of this term revising and
consolidating their GCSE-level Latin in a more analytical manner, before
extending their grammar skills and knowledge into new areas. Their
acquisition of highly sophisticated Latin will provide them with an effective
grounding for understanding and appreciating their set texts for this year.
With regard to Literature, students will study both a prose author – Cicero,
in Verrem – and a verse author – Ovid, Amores. These texts will provide
students with a fantastic appreciation of both Latin rhetoric and Roman law,
and a skilful exploration of love, daily life and mythology.

What could I do with this subject?
A-Level Latin provides an excellent grounding for the study of Classics at university, as well
as a stimulating and challenging subject that complements students’ study in other areas especially Classical Civilisation, English Language and Literature, Modern Foreign Languages,
History, and Religious Studies and Philosophy.
