ELECTRIC FIELD HOCKEY
Purpose: To understand how the electric field force affects a given mass.
Procedures:
-Go to phet.colorado.edu
Type “field hockey” in search bar
Select the simulation “electric field hockey”
Click Run Now
-Complete the simulation as instructed below.

Name
Electric Field Hockey
Once you have completed the practice exercises, select Difficulty 1 from the choices at the bottom of the Electric Field Hockey
window. As you proceed through the following exercises, pay particular attention to the difficulty level and stated restrictions,
if any.
Difficulty 1 – Freestyle: Use as many charges as you like to score a goal. Sketch your charges and the puck’s path below.
Difficulty 1 Qtip
Dipole –/+: Arrange charges as shown below. Use as many additional charges as you like. Sketch your solution.

Electric Field Hockey Post-Game Analysis
1. Reset the simulation. Check the “Field” box. Put a positive and negative charge on the screen. Which direction
do electric field lines point for positive charges (toward or away from the charge)?
2. Which direction do electric field lines point for negative charges (toward or away from the charge)?
3. What direction will the puck move?
4.
What direction will the puck move?
Puck
5.
Puck
What is different about the motion in #3 vs #4? (Does the puck move faster or slower with more charges?)
6. What is different about the force between #3 and #4? (Is the force bigger or smaller with more charges?)
7. What different about the acceleration between # 3 and 4? (Is the acceleration greater or smaller with more
charges?)
8.
What direction will the puck move?
9.

10. What is different about the motion in #8 vs #9? (Does the puck move faster or slower with more charges?)
