Bellringer! • 1. Can you describe the “Ring of Fire” in ten words or less? • 2. What other than an earthquake could cause a seismic event? A Living Planet Internal Forces Shaping the Earth Wednesday, January 25th Outcomes: • Students will be able to explain the concept of plate tectonics. • Students will be able to identify the one major cause and one major effect of an earthquake. Plate Tectonics Plate Tectonics • They are gigantic moving pieces of the Earth’s lithosphere • The slight movements cause a number of different natural disasters like earthquakes, tsunamis and volcanic eruptions. • There are three classifications for the plates movements. Plate Movements Convergent Boundary Plates collide, causing either one plate to dive under the other or the edges of both plates to crumble Divergent Boundary – Plates move apart, spreading horizontally Transform Boundary – Plates slide past one another Faults are cracks in the earth’s surface caused by plate boundary pressure Earthquakes Seismographs detect earthquakes; it is specifically designed to measure the size of the waves. The Richter Scale uses information collected by seismographs to determine the strength of an earthquake. (1-8.9) The location in the earth where an earthquake begins is called the focus. The point directly above on the earth’s surface is called the epicenter. The Ring of Fire is a zone formed around the rim of the Pacific Ocean, it is the location of the vast majority of active volcanoes in the world. Volcanoes / The Ring of Fire Natural Disaster Videos Tsunamis, Volcanoes and Earthquakes, Oh My! My Tectonic Story Directions! • • • • You will create a story as if you are a tectonic plate, and in this story, you are going to explain what your future plans are. You will need to include: 1.) Your story must be at least eight complete sentences (2pts) • 2.) The name of the exact plate that you referring too (ex. The Scotia plate) (2pts) • 3.) A created name (ex. Fredward) (2pts) • 4.) The current direction the plate is moving (ex. Currently, I am slowly moving NW) (2pts) • 5.) Your future plans (ex. One day I hope to creep a bit closer to the Nazca plate) (2pts) Vocabulary! • 6.) You must include at least 10 of the following vocabulary terms correctly and they must to be underlined: absolute location relative location hemisphere equator prime meridian latitude longitude map continent mantle magma crust lithosphere continental drift transform boundary oceanic landform continental landform plate tectonic divergent boundary fault earthquake convergent boundary tsunami volcano lava Ring of Fire (Worth 10 points!) Closure - Explain to the class what the concept of plate tectonics is in your own words. - Identify one major cause and one major effect of an earthquake. Coming Soon to a Lesson Near You!
