Pre-AP Pre-Calculus Cereal Box Project To make boxes for its products, a cereal company starts with a piece of cardboard that measures __________________________. (Write in dimensions given to you by the teacher.) The squares and corresponding rectangles are partially cut from the corners and used as flaps. When folded up, the cardboard creates a box with a lid. Write in your smaller dimension Write in your larger dimension G: Goal: Your task is to build a three dimensional cardboard box that provides a maximum amount of volume and is visually appealing to customers. R: Role: You are a product engineer for a cereal company. A: Audience: Cereal consumers. S: Situation: A cereal company is looking to revamp their packaging of various dry cereals. You are competing with your fellow classmates for the best new design and presentation for a new container. Your container design should enhance the customer’s desire to purchase your chosen food item. Because the cereal company wants to keep the packaging costs down, you have a limited amount of material. P: Product: Given a two dimensional, rectangular piece of cardboard with assigned dimensions, you need to develop a three dimensional box with a lid. This box needs to hold a maximum volume of food. You will also find the surface area and the domain for the situation and provide a graph that justifies the maximum volume and the domain. S: Standards: Your three dimensional box design should… -Be created from poster board by cutting corners only, folding to make the sides and top of the box, and only taping corners together. -Show the correct maximum volume with justifiable work/calculations (including a graph). -Label the length, width and height of the box - correctly find the surface area and domain. Then, in writing, give the cereal company another option of a box with the same volume but less surface area. What is the size of the two dimensional cardboard needed to create this other option? Would you advise the cereal company to use the box you built or this other option that has less surface area? (Do NOT build this other option.) All work should be on outside of box. Create a nutrition label for important measurements. The top 3 cereal box designs, as voted on by the cereal company (the class), will win the job (5 points on this project grade)! Grading Rubric Name__________________________ Class Period ________ Elements Possible Points A box has been created by folding and taping all corners together. The Points Earned 10 dimensions given were used to create the box from poster board. The correct length, width, and height have been defined, calculated, 20 measured, and labeled. Work shown. The correct volume and domain for the height have been calculated. Work & 20 graph shown. The correct surface area has been calculated with work shown. Other dimensions with the same volume but less surface area have been 20 20 calculated. Original size of poster board that yields this volume and surface area listed. Justification provided. All of the box is decorated. Project is neat and colorful. Work easy to find. 10 Directions followed. Rubric turned in with project.
