ENERGY What is Energy? Energy is the capacity to do work or to produce heat 3 Main Forms of Energy 1.Kinetic Energy – The energy of motion Ex: Pushing a desk, riding a bike, lifting your hand Sub categories of Kinetic Energy Mechanical Energy – Energy from objects moving – Examples: engine running, watch hands turning, man running Thermal Energy – Energy caused by the motion of particles – Examples: wood burning, paper burning, engine cooling, pan hot from stove. 2.Potential Energy – the energy of position Ex: holding an object up that is going to fall, food, battery Sub categories of Potential Energy Gravitational potential energy – The energy an object has because it is off of the earth’s surface (you in your seat) Chemical Energy – Energy stored in elements/compounds that will be released during a chemical reaction (batteries, food) Electromagnetic Energy - Energy in the form of wavelengths, usually light. Electrical Energy – energy that exists when objects with different electrical charges are separated – Batteries, appliances, lightning 3.Radiant Energy – the energy of the sun Not important for this class just know it as a type of energy How to Measure Energy The most common unit for energy is the calorie (cal). 1 calorie = the amount of heat needed to raise the temperature of 1 gram of o water by 1 C The SI Unit for energy is the Joule (J) 1 cal = 4.184 J Pronounced like “jewel” Law of Conservation of Energy In any process, energy is neither created or destroyed (just transferred) For example….. When a match is lit, it first possesses potential energy and as it burns it has the energy of heat (thermal kinetic) Bell work: Identify the Type of Energy Dimensional Analysis UGK!!
