LINKING VERBS
• These types of verbs do not show action but connects a subject with a word that
describes or identifies it.
• They connect nouns or pronouns to words that describe, label, or identify them.
Without linking verbs, there
would be lots of “baby talk”
going on.

LINKING VERBS
• Most linking verbs are a form of the verb be.
• Examples: is, are, was, were, am, will be, can be, have been, has been
Kevin was a Navy SEAL.
Kevin identifies SEAL
The winners were Tara and I.

OTHER LINKING VERBS
• Several other verbs also function as linking verbs. They connect
the parts of a sentence in the same way as the forms of be.
Shocked describes teacher.

ACTION OR LINKING VERB?
• Some verbs can be used either as linking verbs or action verbs.
The glass looked dirty.

The host performed the action.
The crowd grew impatient.

Grew links crowd and impatient.
The farmer grew strawberries.
ACTION
The farmer performed the action

• Directions: Read the pairs of words and for each pair, write a
sentence that uses a linking verb to connect them.
• Example: trip

A trip to Hawaii could be an adventure.
HELPING VERBS
• Helping verbs are added before another verb to make a verb phrase. A
verb phrase is the type of verb that is made up of several verbs.
Examples:
open
might have opened
should have opened
had opened
will have opened
will be opened
*Notice how these helping verbs change the
meaning of the verb open.

TIPS
• When looking for the verb in a sentence, ask yourself:
1. Is a physical action being done?
2. Is a mental action being done?
3. Is someone or something being described? If so, look for a
linking verb.
4. Is there a helping verb next to the main verb?
5. Is there a helping verb somewhere else in the sentence?
