Solve the following word problems using the formulas for geometric sequences.
1. The men’s U.S. Open tennis tournament is held annually in Flushing Meadow in NYC. In the first round of the
tournament, 64 matches are played. In each successive round, the number of matches played decreases by one
half.
a) Write the rule for the number of matches played in the nth round. For what values of n does this rule make
sense?
2. In 1990 factory sales of cell phones in the U.S. totaled $118 million. From 1990 through 1996, the sales
increased by 20% per year.
a) Write a rule for cell phone sales (in millions of dollars) in terms of the year. (Let n = 1 represent 1990)
b) What did factory sales of pages total in 1992?
c) When did factory sales of cell phones reach $300 million?
3. On Monday, the first day of a flu epidemic, three employees of a company were absent. Throughout the
week, absences mounted geometrically, peaking at 48 employees on Friday. How many employees were absent
on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday?
4. Records at Danbury Hospital show 2, 10 and 50 new cases of chicken pox were reported for 3 consecutive
days. Assuming that the number of new cases continues to increase geometrically, how many new cases will be
reported on the 5th day?
5. To save for Kelly’s college education, her parents put $1,000 into a savings account when Kelly was born in
1993. Each year thereafter, the McBride family deposited 10% more than the previous year. In 2011, Kelly is 18
and it is time for her to go to college! How much money did they deposit in 2011?
