This is the outer layer of the seed and its job is to protect the seed. A seed also contains endosperm. This is the food for the seed. It is located right underneath the seed coat and surrounds the embryo. The embryo looks like a baby plant with leaves and a stem. The embryo has three main parts; primary roots, cotyledons and embryonic leaves. The primary roots form long anchors into the soil to hold the plant in place as it grows. The cotyledons provide nourishment to the embryo during germination.
