• Southern states break away from
Union
• Don’t want Lincoln as President
• Don’t want slavery messed with
(Lincoln said he would contain slavery)
• Lincoln goes to war to keep Union
together
1860 Presidential Election
A. What military traditions did each side
have?
• North: Strong Naval traditions
(3/4’s of Navy in North)
• South: Strong military leadership
(7 of the 8 military colleges in the
South)
B. What economic advantages did the North
have over the South?
1. Large population (larger in army)
2. Produced 90% of manufactured goods (more iron = more weapons)
3. More railroads (move troops/supplies faster)
