Finding the Theme!
Name_____________________
Theme is the message the author is trying to convey. It is the
life lesson, moral or message about life. There are many
different themes such as friendship, courage, honesty,
kindness, change, letting go etc.
Alice tried to hold back her tears as the moving van pulled out of the her neighbors' driveway. Latoya and
her family were moving two thousand miles away and Alice knew she probably wouldn’t ever see her best
friend again.
Alice wiped her eyes with the back of hand. Things would be different now. There would be no more
sleepovers or late night meetings on the porch. She wouldn’t have anyone to tell her deepest secrets to or
anyone who would lend a sympathetic ear when her little sister drove her crazy.
Alice felt a hand on her shoulder. She turned and saw her mom standing behind her.
“I know it is hard to watch your best friend leave, but you’ll soon find a new best friend.” Mom squeezed
her shoulder. “Maybe LaToya can come back for a visit from time to time.”
Alice shook her head. “I don’t think so, mom.” She waited until the moving van was out of sight then she
ran to her room, threw herself on her bed and cried.
1. What is the theme of this passage?
2. What evidence did you find to support your answer?
3. Could there be another theme?
4. How do you know?

classmates to read the book too. Be sure to make it convincing, but do not write a
summary of the book. You may refer to a couple of parts in your book if you need to
make your point, but don’t tell them everything that happened in the book. Focus on
WHY you liked it and WHY they would too. Use the space below to brainstorm. Write
your essay on loose leaf paper.

During photosynthesis the leaves use light
energy from the sun, water and carbon dioxide

Sensational Seeds!
Seeds come from the fruit and flowering part of plants. Each seed has a seed
coat. This is the outer layer of the seed and its job is to protect the seed. A seed also
contains endosperm. This is the food for the seed. It is located right underneath the
seed coat and surrounds the embryo. The embryo looks like a baby plant with leaves
and a stem. The embryo has three main parts; primary roots, cotyledons and
embryonic leaves. The primary roots form long anchors into the soil to hold the plant
in place as it grows. The cotyledons provide nourishment to the embryo during
germination. The embryonic leaves are the first leaves to appear above ground as the
plant grows.
