Year 5/6 Homework This is the sheet you will need for the project homework which will be completed each week. There will be 4 areas of study and over four weeks, one piece of homework from each must be chosen. This process will then be repeated until the end of the term. You will complete at least 10 of the homework pieces set, at least two from each area and one piece of homework must be handed in each week. You have a homework book, and you can use this to record your homework. If it is a more practical task, or you wish to do it on paper, that is also fine. If work is on paper, it will be put into your topic folder at the end of the term. Spellings will be given out on a Monday and will be tested the following Monday. All pieces of homework will be returned by Wednesday. Additional homework may also be given as necessary, especially leading up to the SATs. We expect this homework to be of good quality – effort will be rewarded and celebrated. You should spend at least an hour on each piece of homework. Most of all, enjoy it! Note for parents: Please support your child in furthering their understanding of the For All The Tea in China topic. The homework has been designed to allow a degree of flexibility and all children have access to school resources and books about the topic. Homework Choices – Spring 2015 Area 1: Maths Research the Shang Numerals. Create a table showing these and then write some calculations using what you have learnt. Create at least 5 word problems based on your knowledge of the Shang Dynasty. Create a timeline showing the start of the Shang Dynasty and the present day. Include any important events/eras that happened in history between the Shang Dynasty and the present day, making sure you put them in the correct order, using your knowledge of negative numbers and timelines. Write a menu of modern Chinese foods, along with prices. Choose a starter, main course, side dish and dessert and work out how much it would cost for your meal. Area 2: Writing Write a journalistic report about the discovery of Fu Hao’s tomb. Write a story based on your knowledge of the Shang Dynasty. If you’re struggling for ideas, try to write something linked to an object or artefact. Write a poem about what China was like during the Shang Dynasty or in the present day. Choose a picture/photograph to base your poem on. Plan a trip to China, researching flights (which airport/what time/what date etc), where you are going to stay (choose a city and a hotel) and things to do while you are there. Area 3: Knowledge and Understanding Create a poster advertising a Shang Dynasty museum collection. Find out as much as you can about bronze and the use of bronze in Ancient China. Find a Chinese recipe. Create this recipe and take a photo to show your creation. (Write the recipe to go with your photo in case others would like to have a go). Find as many countries that border China as you can. Draw the flags of these countries, write their capital cities and, if you can, find an interesting fact about each one. Area 4: Art and Design Research Shang Dynasty ritual vessels and design your own. Use the internet to find an interesting artefact from the Shang Dynasty. Using your observational drawing skills, draw the artefact, paying attention to the light and shade hitting the artefact, as well as the proportions. Create a multimedia piece of artwork (using the computer/iPad) about any aspect of the Shang Dynasty. Research the Shang Gods and present your research in an artistic and interesting way.
