Sermon Series: Advanced Training for Jesus’ Soldiers –
Prepping Ourselves for His Return
2. When the plowing of our hearts is done, God plants
His mercies (faith promises that strengthen us). Verse

Today’s Sermon: Submitting Ourselves to the Training
Disciplines of God
Today’s Passage: Isaiah 28:23-29
(Isaiah 28:23-29 ESV) Give ear, and hear my voice; give attention, and
hear my speech. Does he who plows for sowing plow continually? Does he
continually open and harrow his ground? When he has leveled its surface,
does he not scatter dill, sow cumin, and put in wheat in rows and barley in
its proper place, and emmer as the border? For he is rightly instructed; his
God teaches him. Dill is not threshed with a threshing sledge, nor is a cart
wheel rolled over cumin, but dill is beaten out with a stick, and cumin with
a rod. Does one crush grain for bread? No, he does not thresh it forever;
when he drives his cart wheel over it with his horses, he does not crush it.
This also comes from the LORD of hosts; he is wonderful in counsel and
excellent in wisdom.
Introduction
Context of Isaiah 28:23-29
Suffering and Trials are God’s Way of Training Us to Be Faith
Warriors Who Are Being Equipped to Endure the Temporary
Wrath of Satan in Order to Reign Eternally with Christ.
For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth
comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us. (Romans 8:18 ESV)
1. God only works on the hard soil of hearts with trials
and injustices until we are ready to receive the good
seed of His purposes in our lives. Verses 23 & 24
a) Different soils require different levels of plowing.
Are you a) sandy soil? b) loamy soil? or c) clay
soil?
3. Each seed in the farmer’s garden is planted in the
appropriate spot. The most valued crops get the
better soil, while the luxury crops are given the edges.
Verses 25 & 26. Therefore God has different purposes
for each believer and we can trust Him that He is the
Ultimate Disciple Maker.
4. At harvest time there is still work to do to bring the
crop into its finished form. A wise farmer knows which
process to use on each crop. Verses 27 & 28. So too
does God know exactly what we need in our lives
individually to bring about our finishing touches as
believers.
5. These verses show us that God’s training procedures
on our lives, both now and in the future are:
a) Always in the correct pressure and depth, and
b) Always in the correct amount of time, and
c) Always using the correct methods (what works
for one believer will not work for another)
