June 2011 Edition The Fayetteville Press Newspaper Page 5b Community Barber Shops Barbershop Training On Prostate Cancer “The Cut” Barber Shop Establishing A Men’s Health, Education and Awareness Community Resource Partnership 2000 Ramsey Street * Fayetteville, NC 28301 Cumberland County (Fayetteville), North Carolina (June, 2011): Healthy Carolinians of Cumberland County, Inc. has launched a new program in community health, education and awareness. Its target is “Prostate Cancer”. The novelty of this community partnership is grassroots and focuses on the training of barbers as advocates in their shops. It is not a little known fact, especially in the black community, that the barber shop is indeed a place for more than a haircut. It is a community gathering place where the topics has no boundaries, including health, education and awareness. What happens in the barber shop, stays in the barber shop. We are building upon best practices and a forged trust within the African American Community. Community barber shops have been known as one of the “gate-keepers” of the community. It is recognized that people who may not ordinarily go see or trust a doctor will pay regular visits and confide in their barber, just as they would their Pastor, Priest or Rabbi. Building upon this heritage, a pilot program was started with the Konnecte Kut Barber Shop, located on 908 Brighton Road, Fayetteville, NC. The barbers and some selected patrons were the recipients of the prostate cancer awareness curriculum, “Training The Trainer certification program in which up-to-date materials were presented. The materials used were provided by the Prostate Cancer Network of North Carolina (PCNNC) located in Durham, who have partnered with H.C.C.C for this community outreach.. Dr. Lonnie Sessoms, Jr., Founder and CEO of Healthy Carolinians of Cumberland County and also a Certified Trainer of the PCNNC, conducted the two day training/certification program. The overall objective is to use everyday language in talking to men while they are getting their haircut, or waiting to be seen. Men in the age category of 35 and older, and who have never been screened, or have a history of prostate cancer, are encouraged to visit their local physician for a checkup. It is estimated that 1 out of every 6 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in his life time. When detected and treated early, prostate cancer can be effectively treated or managed in as many as 100% of cases (PCNNC Facts and Statistics) Prostate cancers most common symptom is NO SYMPTOM AT ALL! On an average, every three minutes a man is diagnosed with prostate cancer, and every 15 minutes a man dies of this highly treatable cancer. Through this endeavor, partnerships are being established with local health departments, urologists and other medical doctors, as well as recommendations for men to visit local Care Clinics. Mr. Douglas Dalberry, owner and operator of the barber shop along with co-workers Mr. Alex Jones and Mr. Maurice Selby, are to be commended for their support, participation and partnership in this unique and well timed adventure. Saturday June 18th, 2011, the day before Father’s Day, has been targeted as the kick-off day to highlight the various events that will bring more awareness and education toward this highly sensitive subject. We are asking all men to stop by 3639 Sycamore Dairy Road (off Bragg Blvd, and adjacent to the Fayetteville Press office) and register with us. There is no cost for the registration, and you will receive a special gift for doing so. This is not a petition list, but a concern list. We will highlight prostate cancer overall with special emphasis on the African American Male population as well as encouraging men to seek prostate health care. African American men are at a higher risk factor than other male ethnicity. The North Carolina Gender Disparities (Historical Trends 1980-2004) Mortality, All Races including Hispanics, list that per 100,000 resident population more men are dying of prostate cancer than women are dying of breast cancer. According to the North Carolina Gender Disparities (1980-2004) Breast cancer deaths were 25.4 women per 100,000; while Prostate cancer deaths among men were 32.4 per 100,000 in Cumberland County. The main source for these statistics is the North Carolina State Cancer Profiles.
