•Samuel Barber lived from 3/9/19101/23/1981 in West Chester, Pennsylvania.
•He was an American Composer of
orchestral, opera, choral and piano music.
•Barber wrote his first musical when he
was 7 and attempted to write his first
opera when he was 10. He was an
organist by the age of 12.
•When he was 14, he went to the Curtis
Institute in Philadelphia to study piano,
composition and voice.
Some of his notable
compositions are:
•“A Hand of Bridge”
•“Dover Beach”
•“Hermit songs”
•“Excursions”
•“Vanessa”
He spent many years
in isolation, and was
eventually diagnosed
with clinical
depression, after his
third opera, “Antony
& Cleopatra,” was
rejected.
His background, deeply
rooted in singing, his love
of poetry, and his intimate
knowledge and
appreciation of the
human voice, inspired his
vocal writing.
Barbers composition style has
been praised for it’s:
•Musical logic
•Sense of architectural design
•Effortless melodic gift
•Direct emotional appeal
Samuel Barber
died in 1981,
at the age of
70, from
cancer.
