1815 The War of 1812 ended
1823 Monroe Doctrine was issued warning European nations against interfering with
America
1826 July 4 marks the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of
Independence
1828 Andrew Jackson elected as “The People’s President”
1830s US was expanding its territory in North America and its power was growing
o Indian Removal Act gave the President the power to move Native Americans
west of the Mississippi River to Indian Territory, present day Oklahoma, but
Cherokee refused and went to the Supreme Court
 1838 Forceful removal of the Cherokee was known as the Trail of Tears
1800s The Industrial Revolution changed the way goods were produced, switching from
handmade to machine made and dramatically changed the way Americans lived and
worked
1830 Peter Cooper developed a steam powered locomotive
1838 The fight to end slavery gained a powerful speaker when Frederick Douglas
escaped slavery and became a leader of the abolition movement
1843 A slave named Isabella changed her name to Sojourner Truth because she
believed that it was her purpose to travel the country to preach about God and the
injustice of slavery
1848 Women’s Rights movement began
1821 Settlers began moving to Stephen F. Austin’s colony in Mexican territory
1836 United Stated settlers declared independence from Mexico and formed the
Republic of Texas
1846 The Mexican War began shortly after Texas was annexed, or added, by the
United States
1847 United States controlled New Mexico and California (formerly Mexican territory
where US settlers were living)
1848 The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo officially ended the war giving the US most of
Mexico’s northern territory and Mexico $15 million
1840s Families began moving westward in wagon trains along trails to make better lives
for themselves
1848 Gold was discovered in California
1849 Miners rushed to California from all over the world, now known as the California
Gold Rush, and the population of California skyrocketed
