Manifest Destiny
Manifest Destiny is when Americans thought it was
their destiny (God's plan) to move West and expand
the U.S. from ocean to ocean and spread their way of
life.
Settlers and Manifest Destiny
American settlers liked Manifest Destiny
because they would have more land to
grow crops, like cotton and corn.
Native Americans and Manifest
Destiny
Native Americans were upset because they
would be forced to move off of their land
to make room for the white settlers.
Louisiana Purchase

badly, but they end up getting support from the anger
of the loss and come back to win Texan Independence.
Annex
After Texas gains its independence from
Mexico, they were annexed (made a part
of) the United States
Mexican Cession
the territory (pictured in red on this map) that Mexico gave to the U.S. in exchange for $15 million in 1848,
fulfilling one of the terms of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo that ended the Mexican American War
Border Dispute
America and Mexico disagreed where the border was
between their two countries. Mexico said it was the
Nueces River. The U.S. said it was the Rio Grande
river.
James Polk
The American President who sent troops
into the disputed territory in Texas and led
Americans in the Mexican-American War.
Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo
A treaty that ended the Mexican-American war and
Mexico ceded (gave) its northern territory to the
United States in exchange for $15 million.
Santa Ana
Mexican general who fought against
America at the Alamo and in the MexicanAmerican War.
The Spanish Cession (Florida)
the territory (pictured in green on this map) that Spain gave to the U.S. in 1819
as part of the Adams-Onís Treaty
Oregon Country
the territory (pictured in purple on this map) that the U.S. gained full control
