The research done for the Chicago School is so important to how our society exists
today, it is discussed in all Sociology courses as well as Criminal Justice courses.
THE CONCENTRIC ZONE MODEL
Before the Chicago School models like the CZM were not around, we can now better
understand how our communities are set up
Due to industrialization there were many groups from diverse ethnic
backgrounds in Chicago, you can see from the map that many different
neighborhoods were established
THIS RECENT MAPPING SHOWS HOW THE CHICAGO SCHOOL HAS
INFLUENCED HOW WE LOOK AT CRIME TODAY.
HERE IS ANOTHER OLDER MODEL THAT HAD HELPED EARLY
SOCIOLOGISTS UNDERSTAND THEIR WORKING ENVIRONMENT.
EARLY THOUGHTS ON HUMAN BEHAVIOR WERE MAINLY
THAT IT WAS DETERMINED BY GENETICS, BUT THE CHICAGO
SCHOOL’S MAIN PURPOSE WAS TO SHOW THAT THE SOCIAL
STRUCTURES AND PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT SURROUNDING
THE PEOPLE HAD MUCH INFLUENCE ON THEIR BEHAVIOR
AND ACTIONS.

Clifford Shaw’s work led to the focus on preventing Juvenile delinquency. Instead of
labeling juvenile delinquents, there is now a major focus on prevention and
rehabilitation.

physical mechanism
and an artificial
construction. It is
involved in the vital
processes of the
people who compose
it, it is a product of
