How did the United States help rebuild postwar Europe and Japan?



Much of Europe was in ruins following World War II.
Soviet forces occupied most of Eastern and Central
Europe and the eastern portion of Germany.
The United States felt
it was in its best
interest to help
rebuild Europe and
prevent political and
economic instability.
With Adolph Hitler’s
thirst for power, about
72 million people died
and left most of Europe
in Ruins.
 Europe was split and the
Soviet Union claimed
Eastern Europe.
 After WWI, the US

decided not to help Europe rebuild, which led to WWII.
After WWII, the US decided to help prevent WWIII
the US would support Europe and other countries.
Rebuilding Efforts
1. The United States
instituted George C.
Marshall’s Plan to
rebuild Europe (the
Marshall Plan), which
provided massive
financial aid to
rebuild European
economies and
prevent the spread of
communism.


Label put on all Aid to Europeans

Economic recovery plan developed
and put into action by the United
States and UN to help with
rebuilding efforts for Western
Europe after World War II.
The Marshall Plan was
implemented in 1947 and provided
$13 billion in loans to weakened
countries in Western Europe.
The plan was named after
Secretary of State General Marshall who assembled the
organization and outlined the idea for the U.S. Congress.

Communism Example – “An incredibly basic example of communism would be that you have two cows and the government takes the milk that you
get from the cows and redistributes it to the rest of the population. In capitalism you have two cows and you sell one and
buy a bull to make many other cows and you keep the profits. This is known as you have to spend money to make money.
Communism looks great on paper but is much harder to maintain in real life because you have typical human ignorance and
some people won't do anything to contribute to society and just live off of others hard work just like some people who live
off of welfare because they are too lazy to get a job.” Read more:

3. Following its defeat,

Japan was occupied by
American forces. It soon 
adopted a democratic
form of government,
resumed selfgovernment, and became 
a strong ally of the
United States
The United States sent troops into Japan to help
rebuild their country.
By the end of 1945, more than 350,000 U.S.
personnel were stationed throughout Japan. By
the beginning of 1946, replacement troops began
to arrive in the country in large numbers.
The United States and United Nations assisted
Japan in creating their own Democracy. – We
gave Japan back to Japan
 The United
States
occupied Japan from 1945-1952.
 There are
still US bases in
Japan, today.

4. Establishment of the United Nations

The United Nations was formed near
the end of World War II to create a
body for the nations of the world to
try to prevent future global wars.

-3-
Created by Kate Green
World War II altered the political position and
social structure of the world.
The United Nations (UN) organization was
established to promote international cooperation,
keep peace and prevent future conflicts (global
wars).

World War II as world powers,

2. Since World War II, the United
States has been directly involved in various
conflicts that reflected the divisions created by
Cold War tensions and hostilities.
3. The tension between the free world and the
communist world caused divisiveness at home
and abroad.
4. The Cold War was the central organizing
principle in foreign affairs for 40 years.
How and why did the Cold War begin?
How did Cold War tensions cause divisiveness at
home?
Origins of the Cold War
 Differences in goals and ideologies between
the United States and the Soviet Union (the
two superpowers). The United States was
democratic and capitalist; the Soviet Union
was dictatorial and communist.
 The Soviet Union’s domination over Eastern
European countries
 American policy of containment (to stop the

Containment Domination –
At the end of WWII, the United States and Soviet Union
emerged as rival global superpowers, setting the stage for
the Cold War, which lasted for the next 46 years.
The Cold War
was a time
period, after
WWII, in
which nations
had tactical
(military) and
political
(government)
struggles
between each
other.
During the Cold War, the tensions between countries could
have resulted in WWIII.
Terms to know - Cold War: The state of tension without actual
fighting between the United States and the Soviet Union, which
divided the world into two camps
D v. C
The Cold War was a period in the world’s history where
the two major Super Powers disagreed on pretty much
everything.
 It lasted 40 years.
 They did not actually fight, but
there were several conflicts
between the US and other
countries. And other countries and
the Soviet Union.
 After WWII, the Soviet Union
claimed the countries along its border and part of
Germany and Berlin. They put up the Berlin Wall to
keep people separated. And the Iron Curtain was
developed to contain Communism.
NATO – Peace Keeping Organization made up of
democratic countries to keep order throughout the world
to prevent WWIII. = STOP the spread of Communism
Warsaw Pact – an agreement between communist
countries to spread communism throughout the world.

North Korea is Communist and South
Korea is Democratic. They are split
along the 38°N parallel. China
supports North Korea. The North
Koreans wanted and still want South
Korea for themselves. The US got
involved in this conflict and it ended

Vietnam was a conflict
that Americans were
spilt on their opinions
of should we or should
we not get involved.
China supported
Communist North
Vietnam. The country
was spilt on the 17°N
Parallel. This ended
when both sides set
their weapons down
and called for a truce.
As soon as the US left South Vietnam, the
Communist leaders moved in and took it
over.
Many Vietnamese fled to the US and other
countries to escape Communism. The US
lifted immigration laws for them to be able
to immigrate a little easier to sort of
apologize for the unsuccessful attempt to
help their nation.
Vietnam is still a Communist Nation today.

Trade –

an increase in globalization
Telecommunications –
International and interdependence.
How has globalization impacted American life?



Globalization involves increased integration
of different societies.
Interdependency -



Connecting all the countries of the world through
communication, technology, shipping goods, and having a wide

Communication can happen through phone calls, telephone

Outsourcing – Factories in the US began to feel that it was
too expensive to produce goods made in
the USA. So, they determined it would be
best to move the factory to another
country where people will work for less
money. (Customer Service Call Centers
are a great example).
