Number Sense Unit Test Outline
Test: Thursday and Friday, October 8-9, 2015
Review Session: Wednesday, October 7 – during recess
Please use this list as a guide to help you to study. If you do not understand
something, please make an appointment to come and see me on Monday or Tuesday
before the quiz. You have pages in your binder that we have not finished that you
can use for extra practice. Also, reread your notes, and redo any problems we
have worked on again on a separate sheet of paper while covering the answer.
Writing Numbers
 Write a number in expanded form
123,456,789 = 100,000,000 + 20,000,000 + 3,000,000 + 400,000 + 50,000 +
6,000 + 700 + 80 + 9
 Write a number using expanded notation
32,854 = (3 • 10,000) + (2 • 1,000) + (8 • 100) + (5 • 10) + (4 • 1)
 Write a number in word form
817,000,529 = Eight hundred seventeen million five hundred twenty-nine
 Write a number in short word form
359,625,998 = 359 million 625 thousand 998
 Write a number in standard form:
o From expanded form
o From expanded notation
o From word form
o From short word form
Place Value
 Tell the value of a digit 42,985,613
The “8” = 80,000
The “2” = 2,000,000
 Tell which digit is in a given place
What digit is in the hundred thousands place? 9
 Name each of the periods through millions
123,456,789 – 123 are in the millions period
456 are in the thousands period
789 are in the ones period
 Place commas to show periods
Rounding
 Round any number up to 9 digits to a given place and explain how you did it –
including “rolling a nine”
875,899,342 – rounded to the nearest 10,000 is 875,900,000
 State whether rounding is appropriate in a given situation.
Telephone Number – no
Estimation – yes
Comparing/Ordering Numbers
 Compare numbers up to 9 digits using <,>, =, ≠
34,689 < 261,345
17 ≠ 12 + 3
 Make the 5 largest and 5 smallest numbers possible when given a set of
digits

Negative Integers
 Locate positive and negative integers on a number line

Compare and order positive and negative integers
-5 < -2
Put in order from least to greatest: 3, -4, 0, 1, -2 = -4; -2; 0; 1; 3

Solve problems using negative integers.
If you owe $5 to a friend and you earn $6, how much do you have? $1
