Vocabulary • Phenotype – the physical appearance of an organism • Genotype – the genes carried by an organism • Homozygous – an organism with two of the same alleles for a trait • Heterozygous – an organism with two different alleles for a trait • Purebred – a homozygous organism • Hybrid – a heterozygous organism Phenotype and Genotype How can I determine phenotype from genotype? • An organism’s genotype is the combination of alleles it has. • An organism with either two dominant alleles (homozygous dominant) or one dominant and one recessive allele (heterozygous) would display the dominant trait. • Only an organism with two recessive alleles (homozygous recessive) would display the recessive trait.
