66. border states – Union slave states (Missouri, Kentucky, West Virginia, Maryland,
and Delaware). These were important because of their rivers & resources.
3. Explain why Lincoln promoted Ulysses S. Grant.
4. Explain how two new Civil War weapons changed warfare.
5. Explain why disease was such a problem during the Civil War.
67. Fort Sumter – the first shots of the Civil War were fired here after President
Lincoln sent supplies to Union troops. The South thought they would easily win
the war.
6. Explain why the Mississippi River was so important during the Civil War
7. Explain why King Cotton failed.
8. Describe why the rebel yell was so effective.
68. First Battle of Bull Run – The South thought the war was won after the Union
tried to take the Confederate capital. The North realized it had underestimated
the South & ordered more soldiers.

10. Explain how life changed for women during the Civil War.

turned the tide of the war & was the beginning of the end for the South.

middle of the Union lines at Gettysburg led by General George Pickett. Lee & his
army retreated to Virginia after half of Pickett’s men died in the failed attack.
