HISTORY 351-PERSIA AND THE GREEKS

HIST 351 - Ancient Greece and the Persian Empire (3 credits)
Prerequisites: Hum 101, Hum 102 and one from among Hum 211, Hum 212, and Hist 213 or their
equivalents R510:200 through 299 or R512:200 through 299 or their equivalents with a grade of C or better.
Course description: The political, institutional, and cultural developments of Ancient Greece and the Persian
Empire from the Mycenaean period to the King's Peace (386 B.C.).The course is divided into three parts.
The first traces the rise of the Greeks and the Persians after brief description of Archaeology
and the Bronze Age. The second portion covers the Persian War and the rise of Athens. The last
part deals with the Great Peloponnesian War and the impact it had on the Greek World prior to the
rise of Macedon.

The first part of the course will be primarily on the lectures with handouts, the remainder on the
following two books:

BEFORE EACH EXAMINATION THERE WILL BE A PERIOD DEVOTED TO QUESTIONS
AND A REVIEW.
Graded Work: There are two exams, a midterm and a final paper which serves as the final exam.
Additionally, each student must make a presentation on a selected topic at the end of the
course. REVIEWS ARE ALWAYS BEFORE THE EXAMINATIONS.
