Layers of the Earth/Atmosphere Jigsaw Activity Each group will randomly choose a layer of either the atmosphere or the interior of the earth. They will research it and answer the questions listed -in a typed expository report format [TNR, 12 font,1.5 sp, 1” margins]. In addition, they will create a visual aid that accurately displays the layer chosen. Visual aids may be chosen from the following list: *3-D model [labeled] *PowerPoint Presentation [5 slide min.] *Prezi Presentation [5 slide min.] *Video recording [min. of 3 mins.] *Edible food item [labeled] Layers of the Earth/Atmosphere Jigsaw Activity Each group will randomly choose a layer of either the atmosphere or the interior of the earth. What is below me? What am I made of? What’s my temperature? What state of matter do I consist of? What is my thickness? Why are tectonic plates significant? Describe in your report and in your visual aid how tectonic plates move. Group 2: Asthenosphere What is above me? What is below me? What am I made of? What state of matter do I consist of? What is my thickness? What’s my temperature? Describe how molecules in a liquid behave in your report and in your visual aid. Be specific regarding distance between molecules and speed of their movement. Group 3: Mantle What is above me? What is below me? What am I made of? What state of matter do I consist of? What is my thickness? What’s my temperature? Demonstrate how convection takes place in the Mantle in your report and in your visual aid. Group 4: Outer Core What is above me? What is below me? What am I made of? What state of matter do I consist of? What is my thickness? What’s my temperature? Describe in your report how this layer is thought to create Earth’s magnetic field. Demonstrate how Earth’s Magnetic Field protects us. http://youtube/gnvx--K77aA Group 5: Inner Core What is above me? What is below me? What am I made of? What state am I in? What is my thickness? What’s my temperature? Describe in your report and in your visual aid why the inner core is a solid. Be sure to indicate how the molecules in a solid behave. Group 6: Ionosphere What is above me? What is below me? What am I made of? What is my thickness? Why is the thermosphere significant? Describe in your report and in your visual aid how solar flares produce the Northern and Southern Lights. Group 7: Stratosphere What is above me? What is below me? What am I made of? What is my thickness? Describe what a molecule of ozone looks like [chemical formula]. Describe in your report and in your visual aid why the ozone layer is important and significant. Group 8: Troposphere What is above me? What is below me? What am I made of? What is my thickness? Why am I significant to you? Describe in your report and in your visual aid the term conduction. Tell what goes on here that doesn’t in any other layer. Group 9: Exosphere What is above me? What is below me? What am I made of? What is my thickness? Why is the thermosphere significant? Describe in your report and in your visual aid why this layer is different from the rest. Group 10: Mesosphere What is above me? What is below me? What am I made of? What is my thickness? Describe in your report and in your visual aid why the Mesosphere is significant to the safety of the earth. Group 10: Air Pressure Show how Earth’s air pressure changes from the top of the atmosphere to the ground. Demonstrate why Earth’s atmosphere is denser close to the ground. What does it mean when people say, “the air becomes thin”? At what altitude does this happen? Describe in words and pictures how can air pressure be used to predict whether? Group 11: Geosphere How did the different layers of the Earth get discovered? Describe in words and pictures OR in a creative demonstration how seismic waves are used to determine the composition of the Earth. Group 12: Erosion What is erosion? Describe in words and pictures the 2 types of erosion? Include interesting pictures of erosion on Earth? Be sure to show erosion by each type.
