Analyzing Poetry
Using this graphic organizer, you will analyze a poem. There is no right or wrong way to enjoy or
analyze poetry. This graphic organizer will simply give you a systematic way to unlock the
meaning of a poem.

The first step is to choose identify key words from the text; if possible, group similar words.
Key Words
The next step will be divided the poems into sections, and summarizing each section. These
sections can be a line, a group of lines, a stanza or a group of stanzas. Your summary should
just be one or two sentences.

Next, identify the form of this poem. Is it free verse? Does it have a set structure? Is it written in a
traditional poetic form? Does it rhyme? You should also consider the relationship between the form and
the meaning of the poem. How does the structure of the poem relate to the meaning?

Next, consider your key words and your summaries. In the section below, brainstorm the
meaning of the poem. Remember, good poetry has a literal meaning and a deeper meaning.
Next, write a short summary of the poem. Make sure you use a topic sentence with the author’s
name and title. Use at least two specific details from the poem. Mention the connection between
form and meaning. Include a concluding sentence that clearly states the theme of the poem.
