First composer at Carnegie Hall
Wrote ballets but did not fall
Dad wanted him to study law
But became one of the best composers of them all.
He wrote majestic music in the Romantic Era. In this case, the music was
the “1812 Overture.” He was born in Russia in 1840, but since there had not
been an important composer in his country at that time, he was asked to
write the “1812 Overture” to celebrate Russia’s victory over Napoleon in
1812. He was odd, but very talented. In fact when he conducted, he let his
head rest on his left hand so his head would not fall off. His dad wanted him
to become a lawyer, and he did, but loved music. He wrote many ballets and
was honored by the United States by being asked to be the first conductor
at the dedication of Carnegie Hall.
You will recognize his music by the cannons followed later by a long spiral and
then bells.
