EXPLANATION:
The student is expected to...
» build a model to illustrate the structural
layers of Earth, including the inner core,
outer core, mantle, crust, asthenosphere,
and lithosphere.[6.10A]
» use models to represent aspects of the
natural world such as a model of Earth's
layers.[6.3B]
» identify advantages and limitations of
models such as size, scale, properties,
and materials.[6.3C]

EVALUATION:
1. Remind students that this is a new
semester with a fresh start and new
challenges. Students need to clean out
their binder from all old papers. Students
will receive a new grade graph and their
first graded paper for the new six
weeks. Students will be reminded about
our RESPECT rules and expectations.
EXPLORATION: 2. Students will go on a
scavenger hunt in order to research the
layers of the Earth and find a variety of

earth. Next, students will look at a
globe. "What is so great about a globe
compared to a map?" Discuss with

their binder from all old papers. Students
will receive a new grade graph and their

our RESPECT rules and

classes will receive their coupon for the
six weeks and be reminded that they are
only allowed one late paper per six weeks.
EXPLORATION:2. Students will go on a
scavenger hunt in order to research the
layers of the Earth and find a variety of
facts about each layer.
EXPLANATION:1. Students will watch
the EduSmart video over the Earth's
layers as part of an introduction to this
TEK.
ENGAGEMENT:2. Students will play
charades. Students will work in groups to
act out various events occurring on the
Earth's surface. Then students will
discuss why they believe these events
occur.
EXPLORATION:
EXPLORATION:
EXPLANATION:1. Students will read
from their textbook pages 390
-391-392. As students read, they should
take notes about each layer and the best
way to portray that layer through their
model. We will review the word density
and how this plays a part in the model
they are creating. Finally, students will
receive a cup of ooblek. Students will
relate this substance to the
asthenosphere. What material would be
best for the asthenosphere in their
model? By the end of this lesson, all
students should have a labeled drawing
ENGAGEMENT: 2. Students will work in and plan for their model due on
small groups and look at a model of the
Wednesday.

globe. Students are to identify the
advantages and disadvantages of this
model within their group.

ENGAGEMENT:
·What should be considered when
building a model of Earth’s layers?
Students can choose to work with a
partner or complete the project
alone. The students are responsible for
building a model of the earth using
every-day objects. The rubric explains in
detail what is expected for each
layer. After the explanation of the project,
students will have time to brainstorm for
ideas in class and ask questions, but the
project is to be completed at home and
brought to school on January 28th. This
is a major grade.
