Notes for the Teacher
Note!
As we produce new language arts curriculum, some diagnostic tests become outdated. This
booklet is for the 2005-2006 school year. You need to choose which Level 800 test you will give. To
ensure accurate testing, use up-to-date diagnostic tests.
Why Diagnostic Testing?
Diagnostic tests are specifically designed to determine where a student should begin in the curriculum. Results from these tests give better direction for placement than a student’s age or grade
level since the course of study varies so much between schools and curricula.
What Portion of This Booklet Should a Student Complete?
This book covers four levels : 500, 600, 700, and 800. Use this chart to decide which ones to work
through.

*Grade 6 students should also work through test level 400.
Why are there two tests for Level 800?
These tests are provided for schools in transition from the older curriculum to the new Sunrise
Edition. If students will be working in the older version of Level 800, use that test.
How Should the Test be Administered?
Time. This is not a timed test. Students may take as much time as needed. Give periodic breaks,
at least five to ten minutes every hour, and more often for younger students. Ideally, testing should
be spread over a two-day period. Test-weariness gives unreliable test results.
Guidance. You may help students understand instructions; however, do not hint at answers.
Environment. Inform students that the test is important, but avoid a tense atmosphere. Help them
to feel that the best they can do is good enough. Check comfort factors such as lighting and ventilation. Keep noise and other disturbances to a minimum.
Progress. The student may need to skip particularly difficult activities. He should continue
through the levels assigned by the above chart unless he reaches frustration level, which is 50% or
more not understood.
v
How Do I Score the Test?
Using the answers in the Teacher’s Manual, put a mark through the number of each question
the student answered incorrectly.
For each LightUnit, count how many of the numbered activities were answered correctly. Write
the number of correct answers in the box beside the LightUnit number.
How Do I Determine Placement?
Use the Diagnostic Test Summary page found on the next page of this book.
1. Remove the summary page from the book.
2. Transfer the number of correct answers for each LightUnit onto the Diagnostic Test
Summary.
3. Find the student’s learning gaps.
On the Diagnostic Test Summary, circle the LightUnit numbers for which fewer than
seven are correct. The student has not mastered the material in these LightUnits. They are
called “learning gap” LightUnits.
4. Find the student’s performance level.
Find the first three consecutive gap LightUnits. Put a box around the first of these three.
This is the student’s performance level.
In the Sunrise Edition, determine the “Gap” LightUnits by looking at where the main lesson is taught in the LightUnit. You want to be sure that students get enough exercise for
the “Gap” problem. If the concept is tested in the same LightUnit, you are probably okay.
If it is not tested until the following LightUnit, then you will need to purchase the following one in order to provide enough drill in the We Remember sections.
5. Complete the bottom of the Diagnostic Test Summary.
The student will need to complete all gap LightUnits that come before the performance
level LightUnit. Write these at the bottom of the page.
The student will work consecutively through the curriculum beginning with the performance-level LightUnit. Write the performance level LightUnit on the bottom line.
Why are there no tests for Sunrise LightUnits 507, 707, and 807?
In Sunrise LightUnit 507 and 807, students write a research paper. These LightUnits have no We
Remember sections, spelling words, quizzes, self checks, or final tests.
In Sunrise LightUnit 707, students do a book study. It has no We Remember sections, spelling
words, quizzes, self check, or final test.
