Interactions Among Living Things
Each organism in the
saguaro community has
unique characteristics.
These characteristics
affect the individual’s
ability to survive in its
environment.
What is natural selection?
• What is happening in this picture?
• A characteristic that makes an individual better
suited to its environment may eventually become
common to that species through a process called
natural selection.
• Natural selection results in adaptations…
What is an adaptation?
• A behavior or physical
characteristic that
allows an organism to
survive or reproduce in
its environment.
• EX:
• Adaptations result in
specific roles or
niches…
What is a niche?
It is the role that an organism
plays in its habitat, or how it
makes its living. This
includes:
• type of food
• how it obtains food
• which other organisms use
the organism for food
• required physical conditions
• role or job it plays in its
ecosystem
EX:
Think!
• Number your paper 1 – 4.
Leave five spaces between
each number
• Using the list of things that
describe an organism’s
niche at the bottom notes
page 4, identify each thing of
the pictured organism’s
niche. Please include its job
or the role that it plays in its
environment.
• Please be prepared to share
your answers with your
neighbor.

What is predation?
• An interaction in which
one organism kills
another for food.
• Predator: organism that
does the killing
• Prey: organism that is
killed
• EX:
• What affect does
predation have on
population size?
What affect does predation
have on population size?
• Populations of predators and their prey rise and fall
in related cycles.
• EX:
• What is the importance of the predator-prey
relationship in the environment?
• What helps each organism to survive?

• Predators have
adaptations that help
them catch and kill their
prey.
• Organisms have many
kinds of adaptations
that help them avoid
becoming prey.
