Welcome to AP World History! Dear AP World Students, Welcome to AP World History! Congratulations on choosing to embark on such a wonderful learning experience. We hope you are excited to learn about 10,000 years of World History in one school year! You will have many opportunities for rigorous and challenging projects, discussions, and assignments. Our goal is to be prepared for the AP World History Exam in May. The Summer Assignment will give you an overview of the places and events that we will learn about this year. When you complete this packet, you will have a collection of maps and timelines that will help you throughout the course. These assignments are due at the beginning of the school year. In order to be successful, it is important that you get off to a positive start; you cannot fall behind in an AP class! In AP World History, you can expect to have homework every night for the entire school year. You can also expect to read the majority, if not the entirety, of the AP World textbook. The text is challenging and requires you to learn some material on your own; there is simply too much history to cover it all in class! You should also expect to write an essay every two weeks to prepare you for the three types of essays on the AP exam. An AP course is a challenging and rigorous, but very rewarding experience. You should be prepared to work harder and learn more for the same grades you have earned in the past. It won’t be easy, but mastering the skills taught now, as a 10th grader, will make every class you take in the rest of your academic career feel like a piece of cake! We look forward to having you in class for the 2011-2012 school year. If you have any questions or concerns about the course or the Summer Assignment, you can come by our classrooms or email us. This packet has also been posted on our websites. Have a wonderful summer!!! Get excited about AP WORLD!! When you complete this assignment, you will have an overview of the places and events you will learn about throughout the year. Knowing where and when things happened right from the start will help you keep the entirety of world history in a logical order in your head! Remember, this is not an assignment to put off to the last night before school starts in August. Though it is not designed to be highly challenging, it is not a short assignment. You don’t want to come to the first day of school without any sleep, or without the assignment done. Start the year off right – complete a few parts of the assignment each week during the summer. P A R T 1: AP W O R L D R E G I O N S Use the map of Selected World Regions on page 3, as well as any other resource you may need, to complete the chart on page 4. For each timeline: Use a single sheet of paper (front and back is OK). Use a consistent scale (400 years should be four times as long as 100 years). Use BCE/CE (and be careful not to mix them up!). Research start (and end, when applicable) dates for each event – they are NOT listed in order. Plot each event on the timeline, along with a single sentence summary of how the new era/dynasty/empire began. o For example: the Yuan Dynasty began in China when the Mongols completed their conquest of the Song Dynasty.
