WHATISIDENTITYTHEFT? Identitytheftoccurswhensomeoneusesyourpersonalinformationsuchasyoursocialsecuritynumber oraccountnumberwithoutyourpermission,tocommitfraudorothercrimes.Helpprotectyourselfby: • • • • Immediatelyreportinglostorstolenchecksandcredit/debitcards. Nevergivingoutanypersonalinformation. Shredalldocumentationthatcontainsconfidentialinformation(i.e.bankstatements, creditcardstatements,billsandinvoicesthatcontainanypersonalinformation,aswell asanyexpiredcreditcardsorpaystubs. Checkyourcreditreportannually. WHATISPHISHING? Inatypicalphishingattemptyouwillreceiveane-mailthatappearstocomefromareputablecompany thatyourecognizeanddobusinesswith,suchasyourfinancialinstitution.Insomecases,thee-mail mayappeartocomefromagovernmentagency,includingoneofthefederalinstitutionregulatory agencies. Thee-mailwillwarnyouofaseriousproblemthatrequiresyourimmediateattentionandencourage youtoclickonabuttontogototheinstitution’swebsite. Youthencouldberedirectedtoaphonywebsitethatmaylookexactlyliketherealthing.Sometimes,in fact,itmaybethecompany’sactualwebsite.Inthosecases,apop-upwindowwillquicklyappearfor thepurposeofharvestingyourfinancialinformation. Ineithercase,youmaybeaskedtoupdateyouraccountinformationortoprovideinformationfor verificationpurposessuchasyoursocialsecuritynumber,accountnumber,password,orthe informationyouusetoverifyyouridentitywhenspeakingtotherealfinancialinstitution,suchasyour mother’smaidennameoryourbirthplace.
