Algebra
Algebra is another one of those ‘bad’ math words that most people dislike. However,
the fact is that algebra is nothing more than working with unknown numbers. We call
these numbers ‘variables’. Here is some more vocabulary to get us on our way in our
algebra unit:
Expand
multiplication of polynomials
Factor
writing as a product of factors
Like terms
terms with the same variable part
Variable
a symbol or letter representing an unknown
Numeric coefficient
how many of the literal coefficients there are
Literal coefficient
the variable part of the term
FOIL
acronym First, Outside, Inside, Last
Common factor
a factor of more than one term
Polynomial
Monomial
polynomial with one term
Binomial
polynomial with two terms
Trinomial
polynomial with three terms
Use the glossary at the back of your text to define as many terms as possible from the
list above. Try to give an example where appropriate/possible.
Polynomials
As you have seen in the vocabulary section, polynomials are made up of terms. Each
term is separated from another by a ‘+’ or a ‘-.’ We have special names for
polynomials with one, two and three terms. After that, we refer to them as
polynomials with # terms.
Egs. 3x + 2y – 5 + 2a, is a polynomial with four terms
3x + 2y – 5, is a trinomial
3x + 2y, is a binomial
3x, is a monomial
Can you name two other polynomials of each kind?
Monomials (single terms) are made up of literal and numeric coefficients. The
numeric coefficient tells you how many there are of the literal coefficient. The literal
coefficient tells you what the term is.

Can you come up with three other terms and identify
their numeric and literal coefficients.
