CHAPTER 1
Plate Tectonics
1.1 Reading Study Guide A
movement of tectonic plates causes geologic changes on Earth.
KEY CONCEPT
Earth has several main layers.
Vocabulary
inner core a ball of hot, solid metals at the center of Earth
outer core a layer of hot liquid metals surrounding the inner core
mantle Earth’s thickest layer, it has a more rigid upper portion and a softer,
lower portion.
crust thin layer of rock that surrounds Earth
lithosphere the crust and the very top of the mantle together
asthenosphere a layer of hot, soft rock in the upper mantle
tectonic plate large and small rock slabs that make up the lithosphere

A–B. Core, Mantle, Crust (p. 10)
On the diagram of Earth below, label each layer and write whether the layer
is liquid, solid, or partly solid.
5.
For each row in the table, write the correct layer of Earth that corresponds to
the description.
