Sunflowers for Pot and Bedding Cultivation
To meet demand for ornamental sunflowers which can be enjoyed
in the home, modern plant breeding techniques have been
employed to produce genetically dwarf growing, well branched
varieties without pollen.
These varieties are dual purpose. They can either be either grown
in containers or pots for patio use or be planted in situ in a border.
Objectives of Our Pot Sunflower Range:
Range
♦
Strong plant vigour
♦
Pollen free habit
♦
Uniform and compact growth
♦
Rich green foliage
♦
Multi headed habit
♦
Vibrant colour
♦
Early maturity
Advantages of Pollenless Sunflowers
These plants have flowers that possess only female characteristics,
thus avoiding pollen which can stain furniture or clothes if they are
taken indoors for display.
Being pollenless enables the flowers to keep their colour, shape
and form for a longer time on the growing plants before
senescence. The lack of pollen tends to make them less allergenic
too.
Pollenless varieties of sunflowers do however have abundant
nectar, which means they are still attractive to beneficial insects like
bees and butterflies. In addition, they will still set seeds if open
pollinated varieties are grown nearby, in a garden situation.

Sunflower ‘Microsun F1’
Microsun sets a whole new standard in performance for a potted
sunflower. It is an outstanding plant in pots, containers or open
soil border plantings. This variety has been specifically bred with
double dwarfing genes to produce an extremely compact and
uniform plant type. Combine this with Microsun’s rich green
foliage, the vibrant golden yellow petals and the dark pollen free
core and you have a very attractive plant which takes up very little
space.
Microsun performs extremely well in a range of different pot sizes
and also looks great as a border plant in the open garden. This
variety will produce numerous secondary flowers when grown in
larger pots or open garden situations. These secondary flowers
provide an extended flowering period.
4
Sunflower ‘Eos F1’
Eos F1 is an improved Microsun type with a very compact growth
habit and small dark leaves. It is 1-2 days earlier than Microsun and
has slightly rugose leaves.
It performs well as a border plant and is also very good for
miniature pot growing. Eos is very uniform and suitable for
different pot sizes.

Very compact growing variety with vibrant golden yellow
petals and dark disc.
•
Stays very dwarf, average height only 25-30 cm.
•
Very uniform and perfect for small pots.
5
Sunflower ‘Solar Chocolate Gold F1’
This variety is a stunning pot flowering variety with vivid golden
yellow petals surrounding a rich dark core. It boasts an excellent
flowering life thanks to its pollen free habit and uniform plant type.
Solar Chocolate Gold is a superb choice for an attractive flower
show both in pot and open garden situations.
•
Compact growing variety with vibrant golden yellow petals
and dark disc.
•
Classic sunflower variety: our standard for this type.
•
Excellent in pots.
6
Sunflower ‘Solar Flash F1’
Solar Flash is an eye catching new choice for potted sunflower
colour. It is an early maturing branching type which has striking
bicoloured petals surrounding a dark pollen free core.
This variety displays excellent plant vigour. It is free flowering over
a long period and performs well in both pot and open garden
situations.
•
Compact growing variety with golden yellow petals and dark
disc. Long flowering period.
•
Classic sunflower variety: our standard for this bicolour type.
•
Great for pots.
7
Sunflower ‘Sunshot Golds’
Sunshot Golds is a showy, very double dwarf type, producing a
vibrant display of multiple bright yellow double flowers
surrounding a larger primary flower. The mixed single and double
flowers are pollen free, with duration of up to three weeks.
Plants are up to 50 cm high and this variety can be grown in
larger pots or in the open garden, preferably in a sunny position.
It will tend to produce more secondary branching flowers when
grown with more space in the open garden.
•
Compact growing variety with bright yellow double and
single flowers.
•
60-70% doubles and 30-40% singles make a superb show.
8
Sunflower ‘Lemon Party F1’
Lemon Party is a very early variety that produces an abundance
of flowers with pale lemon yellow petals and a small yellow core.
Flower diameter in trials was 16 cm.
This exciting new bedding type is rather different to other types
with a healthy plant and a very appealing colour. It has a long
flowering season when it is dead-headed.
•
Taller but still naturally compact variety with pale lemon
petals and yellow core.
•
Very free flowering and attractive well-branched habit.
•
Also highly recommended for landscaping.
9
Sunflower ‘Rio Carnival F1’
Rio Carnival is an attractive new pot type having large tear drop
petals. This semi-dwarf variety (60—70 cm) has striking flowers
with a dark burnt red centre and bright yellow outer ring.
This new variety also has attractive dark red stems. It is later
to flower with a taller plant than average and a good number
of secondary flowers. Flower diameter is around 20 cm.
•
Taller but still naturally compact variety, bicoloured with
golden yellow and red petals.
•
Vigorous dark leaves.
•
Long flowering and very good for landscaping.
