LKS2 Topic: The Shang Dynasty of
Ancient China (1600 - 1050 BC)
English and Mathematics homework sent out on
FRIDAYS, to be handed in on WEDNESDAYS.
In Science we will be observing the changes in the local environment throughout the year, as
both year groups complete a year long observation topic. Additionally Year 3 will be looking at
magnetism through contact and distant forces, attraction and repulsion, comparing and grouping materials. We will also be looking at the components of flowering plants and their life cycle.
Year 4 will be studying the sources, vibration, volume and pitch of sound. They will then investigate the Earth’s rotation and position around the sun.
*There will be occasions when English homework will be replaced by
homework around the topic.

Each child should read for a minimum of 20mins
per day at home, reading records are to be annotated in the Reading Record Book.


In RE we will be examining the Lord’s Prayer in detail, studying the concepts within each line of
the prayer and using the prayer as a basis for in-depth discussions on our understanding of
Christianity.
As Historians we will be developing an understanding of world history by studying the achievements of the Shang Dynasty. This also gives pupils an opportunity to understand how our
knowledge of the past is constructed through a range of sources, including archaeological.

In Mathematics we will be learning age-appropriate tables and then utilising that knowledge to
solve a range of mathematical problems. Additionally we will be looking at the key areas of
calculation, shape and measurement.
In English we will be exploring non-fiction through the study and writing of newspaper reports,
examining both language and presentational conventions. We will also be creating a diary entry
based on life in the Shang Dynasty. There will be speaking, listening and memorising
opportunities for the performance of poetry.

As Geographers we will be identifying the location of the Shang Dynasty and contrasting it with
Modern China. We will also be referencing the impact of irrigation on agriculture.
In PSHCE ed. we will be exploring aspects of legal drugs, learning about keeping safe when
involved with risky activities and knowing how to maintain a healthy lifestyle, both emotionally
and mentally.
As Design Technologists we will be planning, prototyping and carving Shang Jade artefacts. We
will also be exploring forces and materials through using natural resources to replicate damming
techniques of Ancient China.
In Computing we will be learning about E-Safety, how to recognise online dangers and being
aware of how we represent ourselves online.
As Artists we will be learning and creating images in the style of Eastern Orthodox iconology.
As Musicians we will be exploring in detail a piece of classical music taken from the BBC 10
pieces. We will be improvising and composing music using similar musical techniques.
In PE we will be developing our skills in hockey (outdoor) and exploring dance techniques
through our appreciation of classical music and the BBC 10 pieces.
In Modern Languages every pupil will continue to learn French and Year 4 will be continuing
with Mandarin.
