6th Grade Geometry Vocabulary
area
The measure of the amount of surface
enclosed by the boundary of a figure. Area is
written in units squared.
area = length x width (ex: cm2 )
area = 10cm x 6cm
area = 60 cm2
coordinates
An ordered pair of numbers used to locate a
point on a coordinate grid. The first value in
the pair is the x-coordinate and the second is
the y-coordinate.
edge
A line segment formed where two faces of a
3-D shape meet.
equilateral triangle
A triangle with all three sides the same length.
All three angles also have the same measure.
face
A flat 2-D surface of a 3-D shape.
isosceles triangle
A triangle with two side the same length.
net
A 2-D pattern that can be folded into a 3-D
figure.
oblique prism
A prism whose side faces are nonrectangular
parallelograms.
perimeter
The measure of the distance around a figure.
It is a measure of length.
(x,y )
(1,2)
( -3 , 7 )
perimeter = side + side + side …
1cm + 4cm + 2cm + 5cm + 6cm = 18cm
perpendicular lines
Lines that meet at right angles. They are often
indicated by a small square where the lines
meet.
polygon
A shape formed by 3 or more line segments,
called sides. Each segments meets exactly two
other segments, but only at their end points.
prism
A 3-D shape with a top and bottom (base) that
are congruent polygons and lateral faces that
are parallelograms.
A 3-D shape with one polygonal base and
lateral sides that are all triangles that meet at
a vertex opposite the base.
pyramid
rectangular prism
A prism with a top and bottom (base) that are
congruent rectangles.
regular polygon
A polygon that has all of its sides and angles
equal.
right angle
An angle that measures 90°
right prism
A prism whose vertical faces are rectangles.
The bases are congruent polygons.
scalene triangle
A triangle with no sides equal.
surface area
unit cube
The area required to cover a 3-D shape.
A cube whose edges are 1 unit long. It is the
basic unit of measurement for volume.
vertex
A corner of a polygon. All angles have vertices.
volume
The amount of space occupied by or the
capacity of a 3-D shape.
The first value in an ordered pair.
x-coordinate
(x,y)
y-coordinate
The second value in an ordered pair.
(x,y)
