Mandate of Heaven
• The mandate of heaven was the right to rule
granted from a divine source.
• Can be lost or gained by anyone.
• If a rebellion fails, the people’s faith in the
ruler is restored
• Natural disaster show that the current ruler is
not pleasing the gods, thus is in need of
replacement.

Dynastic Cycle
• The dynastic cycle is the belief that the rise
and fall of dynasties are controlled by the
Mandate of Heaven.
• According to Chinese political theory, every
dynasty goes through a dynastic cycle.

• A new ruler: Unites China, founds a new
dynasty, and gains the Mandate of Heaven
(“Ancestors” p. 78).
